America set up a policy to be nuetral toward Canada and Latin America. Nuetral with trade that is. It was meant to create strong military allies -
US policy
The US began to trade with China and Japan to supply them with arms and supplies. They traded with both to keep it nuetral. -
fdr ellected as president
Franklin Roosevelt was ellected into office for the first time. He beat Republican renominee President Hoover. He served three terms before dying during his third term. -
Hitlers rise to power
Adolph hitler is appointed chancellor of germany. He sets up his first concentration camp. He led the Nazi party. -
Usa and USSR
In 1933 FDR formally recognized The soviet union. This was in the hopes to trade with them. It was also to make a military ally. -
Japanese embargo
In 1937 Fdr called for an economic embargo on japan. That meant we would ot conduct economic trade with them. -
Austria is taken over
German troops invade austria unopposed. Austria is now under nazi control. -
Nazi expansion.
During 1939 and 1940 Germany expanded their control North and West. They took over Denmark, Norway, The netherlands and Belgium. -
USSR secret deal
THe USSR made a secret deal with germany. This deal was that they would't attack each other. -
Germany invades Poland
The nazi's invaded poland. They had a total of 1.5 million soldiers march in. -
Start of the war
Great britain and France declare war on Nazi germany. This was because of the invasian of Poland. -
France surrenders
In June of 1940 France surrenders to germany after a bombardment of military strikes. -
USSR breaks their deal.
The USSR made a secret deal with Germany to not attack eachother. The USSR broke this deal in 1941and attacked with Great Britain. -
Pearl harbor
THe Japanese bombed a naval base at pearl harbor on december 7th 1941. This act sent us into ww2. -
executive order #9066
In february of 1942 congress passed executive order #9066. This forced all people of Japanese decent into internment camps. It was similar ro what was going on in europe at the time to jewish people. -
Japan and the pacific.
By april of 1942 Japan had captured most of the pacific. This included the Philipenes. -
Bataan Deathmarch
Japan had a forced march of American and Filopino P.O.W's to Camp o'donnell in the Philipenes. Over 2,600 died before reaching there. -
Battle of midway
The battle of midway took place. It was the first major allied victory. The picture is of allied fighter planes during the battle of midway. -
Battle of Normandy.
THe battle of normandy, more commonly known as D-day is possibly the most infamous battle of the war. the allies stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. -
Korematsu vs US
This was a landmark Supreme Court case. Korematsu was fighting against executive order #9066. He lost and the law was upheld. -
Fdr dies
During his third term in office FDR died. He died of a brain hemmorage. After his death truman took over as president. -
German defeat
Nazi germany surrenders. Hitler is defeated. -
V-E day
This was the day we defeated the Germans in WW2. It is known as V-E for Victory in Europe day. -
Potsdam confrence
From July 17 until august 2 in Berlin, Germany a confrence was held about the war. Japan was told to surrender or be destroyed. they refused. The picture is of Fdr, churchill and stalin, Leaders of the allied forces. -
allied bombardment of japan
In the fall of 1944, there was nonstop bombardment of airstrikes on Japans mainland. -
Hiroshima
The japanese city of Hiroshima has a nuclear bomb dropped on it. -
Nagasaki
On August 9th 1945 america launched a second nuclear bomb. This second bomb landed in the city of Nagasaki. Although the bomb was larger than the one dropped on Hiroshima, less people died. -
V-J day
Japan surrendered to the allies. This officially ended ww2. This also meant that we get a navy base in japan. -
The aftermath.
After the war, tensions mounted between the US and USSR. this sent us into the Cold War era. It was a "cold" war because there was no combat.
