-America and Japan shared an island used for airfields. Japan wanted control of it. America defended and won, although we had a lot of casualties

-This is important because it influenced America to launch the Atomic bombs. -

-Japanese limited Allies gains and clung to losses. America pushed South against new Japanese lines and conquered.

-This is important because it was a key battle to get Allies closer to Japan to end the war. -
