Battle of Dunkirk

May 26, 1940

This battle lasted from 5-26-1940 to 6-4-1940. This battle was fought between Germany and the allied powers. Casualties/deaths-22,000 allied powers, and 20,000 German. Military leaders- John Gort (allied powers), Erich von Manstein(Germany). Outcomes- Germany won this battle. Even though the allied powers lost 300,000 allied troops were able to be rescued to safety. They needed to rescue troops because Germany was invading France.

Battle of Moscow

This battle lasted from 9-30-1941 to 1-7-1942. This battle was fought between Germany & Russia. Casualties/deaths-581,000 Russian, & anywhere from 250,000–400,000 German. Military leaders-Georgiy Zhukov (Russia),Walther von Brauchitsch (Germany). Outcomes- Russia won this battle. This battle was the climax of Germany's operation Barbarossa. This battle ended Germany's intentions of capturing Moscow which in turn doomed the Third Reich. Bad weather conditions played a big part in this battle.

Battle of Pearl Harbor

Casualties/deaths-2,403 U.S. Military leaders-Edward Kimmel(U.S.),Hideki Tojo(Japan). Outcomes- Japan won this battle. They won this battle because it was a surprise attack that the U.S. was not prepared for. Nearly 20 of the U.S.'s naval vessels & 300 of their airplanes were destroyed. This event caused the U.S. to join the war.

Casualties/deaths- 3,057 Japan and 362 U.S. Military leaders- Chester Nimitz (U.S.),Yamamoto Isoroku (Japan). Outcomes- The U.S. won this battle. This battle was a key battle to secure dominance in the Pacific. One of Japan's main goals since the war started was to gain territory in the east Asia & Pacific islands.In this battle American pilots were outnumbered 4 to 1 yet they still managed to win.

Military leaders- Vasily Chuikov(Russia), Friedrich von Paulus(Germany). Outcomes-Russia won this battle. This battle severely weakened Germany's forces for later on battles. Russia won this battle by surrounding Germany's sixth army.

Military leaders- Gennady Petrovich Lyachin(Russia), Erich von Manstein(Germany). Outcomes- Russia won this battle. Germany planned a surprise attack on Russian troops,but Russia had already moved their troops away from where Germany planned to attack them. This battle was the largest tank battle in history.

Eisenhower (allied powers), Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt (Germany). Outcomes- Allied powers won this battle. This battle is also known as D-Day. In this battle troops landed on five different beaches.

It was an attempt to push allied powers back from German territory. Germany lost this battle because of fuel shortages.

Battle of Iwo Jima

Military leaders- Douglas MacArthur (U.S.),Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Japan). Outcomes- The U.S. won this battle. This battle is one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps. The U.S. invaded the island of Iwo Jima as part of their campaign against Japan leading to this battle occurring.

Military leaders-Georgy Zhukov(Russia),Helmuth Weidling (Germany). Outcomes- Russia won this battle. It was one of the final battles of ww2. Russia was willing to accept enormous casualties in order to win.
