Germany secured the neutrality of the Soviet Union. Germany then invaded Poland on September 1 1939. Britain and France declared war on Germany on September 3 1939. -
Battle of Britain
The Royal Air Force defended Britain from large scale Nazi attacks. First attack fought entirely by the air force. This attack method was called the Blitzkrieg. -
Pearl Harbor
The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise and destroyed a vast number of the United States Naval Warships. The Japanese used bombs and kamikaze pilots. The attack forced the United States into WW2. -
D-Day
The allied invasion of France. Consisted of 156,000 allied troops invading heavily fortified coast. D-Day is considerd the beginning of the end of WW2. -
War ends in Europe
The allied powers began taking large numbers of axis prisoners. The allies were liberating concentration camps. Germany had lost a large number of soldiers on the eastern front. -
Holocaust
The genocide during WW2 where the Nazis murdered the Jewish people. Over the course of the war about 6 million jews had been killed. After the war only 1/3 of the Jewish population was remaining. -
Atomic Bombs
The United States responded to Pearl Harbor with two bombs. Nagasaki was bombed with "Fat Man" and Hiroshima was bombed with "Little Boy". These were the only atomic bombs ever used during war. Japan surendered after the bombing.
