The Treaty of Versailles.
Treaty of Versailles was peace document signed at the end of World War I by the Allied and associated powers and by Germany in the Palace of Versailles. Both Germany and the allied associates hated the Treaty because it was extremely unfair. Italy in particular was robbed, they recieved way less territory than promised. -
D'Annunzio Takes Fiume
Before the Yugoslavs did,the poet D'annunzio traveled to Fiume with an army and claimed it for Italy, becoming a National Hero. He also aimed to delegitimize the Treaty of Versailles. After a few months, (1920) Giovanni Giolitti, prime minister of italy demanded him to return. -
Mussolini becomes Italy's Prime Minister.
After negociating with Victor Emmanuel , he became the youngest Prime Minister in Italian history.He obtained full dictatorial powers for a year; and in that year he pushed through a law that enabled the Fascists to cement a majority in the parliament. The elections in 1924, though undoubtedly fraudulent, secured his personal power. -

Italy joins Germany in WW2
The German invasion of Poland, unleashed the European war. Italy entered World War II on the Axis side, as the defeat of France became apparent. -
Italy Surrenders
Badoglio announced Italy's unconditional surrender to the Allies. The Germans, who had grown suspicious of Italian intentions, quickly occupied northern and central Italy. German forces also occupied the Italian zones in Yugoslavia, Greece, and France. -
Italy switches sides and declares war on Germany
One month after Italy surrendered to Allied forces, it declared war on Nazi Germany, its onetime Axis powers partner. -
Mussolini's Capture
With the Allies breaking through the last German defences in northern Italy Mussolini's situation became untenable. On 25 April he fled Milan and tried to escape to the Swiss border. He and his mistress, Claretta Petacci, were captured by local partisans near the village of Dongo on Lake Como. -
Mussolini's Death
He was murdered by the Anti-Fascist Italians.He died by execution by firiging squad. After his death the new Italian government declared war against germany. -
