Britain
On August 1st 1940, Goering called an urgent meeting with his Luftflotte commanders at The Hague. It is believed that Goering stated at the meeting, that in the recent attacks on Channel convoys the Luftwaffe had failed to draw the British fighters into the air. The RAF was prepared only to send small waves of fighters and replenish them with new waves when the others returned to refuel and re-arm. -

Italy
Operation Husky was the beginning of the attack on Italy. Canadian soldiers were the first to take the island of Sicily. 60 Canadians were killed / injured, but they captured 650 enemy soldiers.The Canadians now fought for Ortona house by house, often fighting from the top floor down. They used a "mouse-holing" technique–blasting through walls, lobbing grenades through the gaps and then using more grenades to move down the stairs. Here the Canadians wrote the book on street-fighting. -
D-Day
Day of Deliverance - Canada’s largest military operation of WW 2. 14,000 soldiers landed on the beach and 10,000 sailors on 100 ships off the coast. Canada, USA and Britain attacked Normandy, France to take France back from the Germans. Canadians stormed ashore on Juno Beach and were the only force to capture all their initial objectives that day, at a cost of 1000 casualties, of which 350 were fatal. -
