    The use of firebombs was a very controversial because the fires could also kill civillians. The attack started on March 9th. Strong winds fanned the flames. The bombing killed 80,000 people and destroyed more than 250,000 buildings.

    President Truman was now in power and decided to drop the atomic bombs. The Military advisors thought that it would take 1 million men to successfully invade Japan. On August 6, the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, killing up to 120,000 people. On August 9, the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing up to 75000 people.

    Emperor Hirohito decided to surrender on August 15. Even though it was considered dishonorable in Japan. Japan officially surrendered on Sept 2, 1945.

    Bombs fell on Tokyo. Eighty B-29 Superfortress bombers that had traveled more than 1,500 miles did not have much fuel. They needed a fuel base close to Japan. February 1945 600,000 marines landed on Iwo Jima.
