    The German government demanded that they needed free passage across Belgium and even sent a letter to the Belgian government. Belgium was a neutral country, so Germany issued an ultimatum that if Belgium refused to cooperate, then Germany would forcefully occupy the country as an enemy. This invasion was the beginning of WW1.

    Lusitania was a German submarine that sank and killed 1,195 people, including 128 Americans. It immediately strained relations between Germany and the US, which set off a chain of events that eld to the US entering WW1.

    President Wilson went before a session of Congress to request war against Germany on April 2, 1917. On April 4, the US Senate voted in support to declare war on Germany two days later. The US declared war on the German ally Austria-Hungary on December 7, 1917.
