Assassination of an Archduke
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated while visiting Sarajevo. He was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black hand. This prompted Austria-Hungary to declare war against Serbia. -
The Schieffen Plan
The Schieffen Plan was a plan made by Germany for an attack on France. It was created because Russia had started to mobilise troops near Germany. The execution of the plan was what led to Britain decraing war on Germany. -

The Battle of the Marne
The battle of the Marne was the battle where trench warfare was first used in World War 1. Germans were on their way to Paris, but were quickly stopped by the French. The battle was fought near the river in France called the Marne, which is located just 30 miles south of Paris. This battle ended in a much needed Allied victory, but is most importantly known as the main indicator that this war would take more than 6 months to be won. -
Horses in WW1
During World War 1 horses were vital to the war effort. They were used to transport weapons, lead attacks, and move people that were injured. Millions of horses died during World War 1 because they were all seen as expendable items. -
Trench Warfare
Although trench warfare was invented before World War 1, but this was the first war where it was widely used by both sides. It was widely used because there was an increase in firepower but not on mobility. It was used throughout the war, being helpful in long battles. -
The Zimmerman Telegram
The Zimmerman Telegram was a proposal of alliance between Germany and Mexico. It was intercepted by British intelligence and quickly translated. Once the Americans got the news that Germany tried to make Mexico part of the Central Powers they were enraged. This led to American involvement in World War 1. -
Russia Leaves the War
In March 1917 riots broke out in Russia over the scarcity of food and fuel. The people of Russia overthrew the government and installed a communistic government. To be able to leave the war without any abuse from the Germans the Russians made a peace treaty. In the peace treaty they offered Ukraine, Finland, Poland, and the Baltic territories. In return the Germans had to remove their soldiers from Russian soil. -
Zeppelins in WW1
Although zeppelins were invented long before World War 1 they were used. The Central Powers was the side that used zeppelins as scouts and bombers. Zeppelins only killed 500 people, which is why zeppelins were barely used. -
Deployment
Henry Edwin Kunath left Giddings, Texas on 28 June, 1918. He left for the San Antonio Camp called Camp Travis. On 18 July, 1918 he left for camp McArthur in Texas. He stayed in camp McArthur until 1 August, 1918. -

The Battle of the Somme
The Battle of the Somme was the first battle that tanks were introduced in. It was a very costly battle for both sides, especially the Central Powers. Over 1.5 million people died in this battle. -
On the Way to France
Henry left Camp McArthur in the morning and arrived in Tyler, Texas at about noon. In 2 August he arrived in Little Rock. He then arrived in Newport, Arkansas. Later that day he arrived in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He then left for Preston, stayed there for a few hours, and then arrived in St Louis at night. Many more travel was required. On 29 August, 1918 he arrived on French soil. -
Travelling to Battle
On August 29 he landed in Brest, Franch. He stayed just outside of Brest for several days. After travelling for 12 hours he arrived in Ploermal. In 14 September he left Ploermal for Camp Meucon. -
Already?
On 13 October Henry was told that the war was finally over. With that being said he still had to stay in France for another couple months. This was die to the fact that there were many Americans deployed in World War 1. -
On the Way Home
After staying in France for 5 months after the war Henry was finally going home. He left for Rennes on 14 February. He arrived there on 15 February. After staying there for 2 days he went to Brest. From there he left on a boat to New York. From there he slowly but surely made his way towards Texas. -
Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles was one of the many treaties that was made at the end of World War 1. The treaty ended the fighting between Germany and the allied powers. It was signed on 28 June, 1919, exactly 5 years after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand.
