Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Archduke and his wife were shot and killed in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, with a group of 6 assassins 5 serbians, and 1 Bosniak.
The significance of this is it is what started the war. -
Chemical Warfare
French were the first to employ chemical gases, by using a 26mm grenade filled with tear gas. The first large scale use of gas was 1-31-1915 when Germany fired 18,000 shells containing tear gas on Russians, but failed because the tear gas froze and failed to work. -
Battle of the Western Frontiers begins
Series of battle fought along the eastern frontier of France and southern Belgium just after WW1 started. The main point is the German's were trying to fight on both east and west side. -
Battle of the Marne
Resulted in a Allied victory against German Army. 100,000 of them were killed or wounded. -
Trench Warfare
Form of land warfare using fighting lines consisting of large trenches, which military were protected from enemy’s weapons. It was signifacant because it kept less troops getting killed or injured. -
The Lusitania is sunk
Germany waged submarine warfare against United Kingdom and Ireland. They identified the ship and torpedoed by German boat and sank in 18 minutes. -
The Battle of Verdun
Fought from February 21, 1916- December 18, 1916 during WW1, on the West Front, between German and French armies. -
Battle of Somme
July 1, 1916 to November 18, 1916 on both side of Somme River in France. Largest Battle of WW1, more than 1,000,000 men were killed or wounded, making it the bloodiest battle. -
Armistice
This was an agreement that ended fighting in western Europe that comprised the WW1. This agreement pretty much ended the war and stopped fighting. -
Treaty of Versailles
One of the peace treaty signed near the end of WW1. It ended the war between Germany and the Allied Powers. Signed exactly 5 years after the assassination of the Archduke. It helped bring an end to the war.
