Germany started submarine warfare against Great Britain and Ireland. The Lusitania was shot with a torpedoed by the German's and sank within 18 minutes. The Germans sent a coded message to Mexico asking for an alliance. German wanted this alliance in case if the United States waged war against Germany. Britain intercepted this and decoded it.
