    Paul Sunderland was born in Omaha, Nebraska on April 24th, 1896. His family consisted of him, his parents, and his two brothers. Paul Sunderland was a middle child. His father ran what was called a ‘Hard material business’, a manufacturer of harder building materials such as brick, coal, sand, plaster, and more along the lines of that.

    Paul got his first Saxophone when he was just 16. Growing up, Paul Sunderland enjoyed playing the Saxophone. In a nice hot summer, a little band came by, and Paul enjoyed the sounds of the Saxophone. He told his father he enjoyed the instrument and wanted one. Eventually, his father got him one.     Paul graduated in May of 1916. Upon graduating, Paul entered the Culver Military Academy in Indiana for their summer course.

  • Enlisted - July 1917

    Paul Sunderland chose to enlist in the Navy, as the course of training he took at the Culver Military Academy helped him to realize that the Navy was the best place for him. He enlisted in July and received a call back a month later. He enlisted to avoid the draft along with other college members.
  • Job in a musical military band - 1917

    Paul was one of the 20-ish people chosen to be in a military band. The Saxophone was his chosen instrument, and the one that was first given to him by his father, and the first Saxophone of his collection. He was the only Saxophone player in the band.
  • End of WW1 - 1918

    As Austria-Hungary allies surrendered, and discontentment being a present emotion on the battlefield, they were pressured into surrender, and thus started the end of WW1
  • Engaged - 1919

    Paul Sunderland met his wife while in school at the University of Wisconsin. In 1919, he got engaged to her, and took her Omaha, in which his residence was back in that time. Paul was 24, while his wife at the time was 22. They had their first child, Robert Sunderland in December of 1921, and another child, James P. Sunderland.
