  • The great War

    Before WWII happened WWI was known as the ‘Great War’. It was given the name considering it was the only war involving multiple countries at the time.
  • Assassination of Franz Ferdinand

    Franz Ferdinand was shot and killed by Gavrilo Princip. He was shot in Sarajevo during a parade. This assassination sparked a chain of bad events. This assassination was one of the reasons for World War 1.
  • The start of WW1

    World War 1 began in 1914 after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and it didn’t end until 1918. During this war the Central Powers and the Allied Powers fought against each other. The actual causes of the war were mostly nationalism and militarism. People had lots of pride for their countries and countries stocked up for the war so they could have to best military and it ended in the result of WW1.
  • Christmas truce

    Starting On Christmas Eve the German and British allies sang Christmas carols to each other across the lines. On Christmas day they joined together and gave one another presents and played a game of soccer.
  • The Lusitania was sunk

    The Lusitania was sunk by a German torpedo. The Lusitania was a British ship that held 128 Americans who died. Because of the ship being torpedoed by the Germans the United States started thinking about entering the war. Americans started speaking out about joining the war after this event happened.
  • The beginning of tanks

    During world war one tanks were used for the first time in the battle of Flers-Courcelette in september 1916. This was the first time tanks had ever been used in warfare. In 1918 Britain and France had produced 6,506 tanks between them. Germany had produced just 20. This tanks arent as good as they are now but they changed war forever.
  • The Selective Service Act

    The Selective Service Act was made to build up a military. Any male ages 21- 30 had to register for military service. Many of the men were put into the military because we needed more soldiers. There were several men who ran away from the draft, they are called defectors.
  • The birth of plastic surgery

    World War one caused a dramatic rise in the number of facial injuries. Many were dying from these injuries. Surgeon Harold Gillies developed a method for facial reconstruction surgery in 1917. We still use this method to this day, We now call it “Plastic surgery” It has improved by a lot and is also used for different reasons now.
  • The U.S enters the War

    The U.S. congress authorizes a declaration of war against Germany. The U.S. entered the war joining the Allied Powers. More than 2 million soldiers fought for the U.S. Many Americans wanted to stay neutral during the war but there were also many Americans that believed we need to join it.
  • Nash sends letter to his dear friend

    In this letter you can tell how hard this is for him and how much he misses his friends and family. Even though its hard he has a lot of work and has been getting so much done.

    This letter to his parents was him telling them how he cant tell them very much about whats going on. He said even though they won't be very interesting he will be writing to them as often as he can. He explained the ship as “fine and clean”, and told them that he has been doing well.

    Nash talks about how it is getting very bad. He says, “it has gotten to the point now where the Germans must stay on the offensive every minute for it is only a question of time before they will be greatly outnumbered." He thinks they will be beaten in a short amount of time.

    In this letter Nash talks about How the past few weeks have been wonderful for the allies. He said he would not be surprised if it was all over by 1919, if the had a good fall.

    “Bulgaria and Turkey have quit completely and Austria is trying but can’t seem to get the Allies to let her… no matter what Germany says or does she simply cannot stand any length of time”
    This letter was basically an update, there isn't as many people in the fight and things are calming down.
  • Armistice Day

    Armistice day is the day where an Armistice was signed. It was signed to end all fighting on the Western Front. Armistice day is also known as Veterans Day. We celebrate Armistice Day to honor anyone who has fought or is currently fighting for our country.
