    Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and wife were killed by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo. They secured the support of their ally Germany Austria said all the anti-Austrian propaganda in Serbia be stopped. They will be allowed to do their own investigation for who killed the archduke. Serbia accepted these and Austria went ahead with military preparedness measures. Russia, Serbian ally being promptly alerted began its own initial steps towards military mobilization against Austria.

    Germany declares war on Russia and France
    Two days after Germany declared war on Russia France was the next one. The former chief of staff Alfred von Schlieffen had a strategy for a two front war. After a few hours, France made its own declaration of war against Germany, readying its troops to move into the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine.

    Voisin III, was the first Allied plane to shoot down an enemy aircraft French pilot Roland Garros was in an airplane armed with a machine gun that fired through the propeller. He shot down his first plane in his first flight.

    Allied and German forces begin the first of three battles in an attempt to control the city and helpful positions on the north coast of Belgium. This battle was apart of something known as the race to the sea.

    He caught 4 prisoners that he took to the jail they were on a wagon trying to get into the military base. His job was to inforce the law on the military bases.

    This was the beginning of chemical war fare. Chlorine gas was dispersed from cylinders over the Belgium city. If large amount where inhaled then it would cause a slow painful death. As an advantage the Germans didn't want to move into the gas cloud that was 4 miles long even though they had gas masks. 87,000 allies where dead or missing and 35,000 Germans where killed or missing.

    British forces launched an attack against the Germans in Belgium. The French attacked the German lines at Champagne and at Vimy Ridge. they wanted to remove some of Russia's distress on the Eastern Front so they diverted the Germans resources.

    This battle was considered one of the largest fought. This was the bloodiest battles as well. On the first day the British had more than 57,000 casualties by the end of the battle the Allies and Central Powers lost more than 1.5 million. after this battle the british began to improve their tactics.

    German General Erich von Falkenhayn wanted tons of bloodshed from the french defense. Even though the Germans where within two miles of Verdun they called off their attack in mid-July. The French got their forts back and pushed back the line and by the time their forces stopped in December there was over 600,000 dead.

    an Allied force had almost 4,000 US soldiers they got the village of Cantigny, on Somme River in France from Germany. American didnt want to send their military into the war until 1 year later. A lot of military from the US was sent to France in time for the big German attack. After the French allies lost the battle they decided to help out the US and gave tanks and weapons they even gave flame throwers. John J pershing said that no inch of cantigny was supposed to be surrendered.

    The second British army won a huge win at cantigny. There was 18 months of planning to win the battle. There was 1 million pounds of explosives in mines which turned the tide of the battle. The mines were almost 1000 feet long. More then 10000 German soldiers died instantly. The Germans had to move back and resulted in many victories after that.

    Germans thought going into a battle at Flanders would be their best bet for a win. They wanted to move the allied troops away from a big battle. There was 30000 US allied troops killed under french order. And America began to lose a large number of soldiers.

    The first platoon went out to the Nantilian Canal road and there was many "fritz and Yanks" pulled from trenches and they located a cabin that the Fritz were using for their first aid. A gas alarm went off and shells were fired but luckily there was no harm done.

    Machine guns where fired at them and many horses where killed. There was 15 soldiers with Philip and they had to move away from direct fire through the woods. 60 kills where made by their platoon.
