World War 1 war triggered when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated along with his pregnant wife. Ferdinand was the heir to the thone in Austria-Hungary. The assassin was from "The Black Hand" a Siberian terrorist organization. Austria-Hungary declared war on siberia the same day. -

world war one was the first "Modern War" that had two sides. The Central powers and the Entente powers. The main powers of the Centrals powers were, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary. The main powers in the Entente powers were, Great Britain, France, Russia, and later the U.S.A joins. The "Great War" lasted from 1914 to 1918. A estimated 16,500,000 died during the war. -
Battle of Tannenberg
The Battle of Tannenberg was considered one of Germanys greatest victorys over Russia. Around 92,000 Russian prisoners were taken by the Germans. The Germans lost 20,000 men during the 3 day battle. Only 10,000 of the 150,000 Russians were able to retreat. After hearing the news General Alexander Samsonov killed himself. -
Trench warfare
The first trenches were seen in Europe, which led to a stalemate. Trench warfare was considered a hell hole because of the constant smell of death and non-stop noise. Illness travelled fast through the trenches because of the rats and lice -
Unofficial Christmas Truce announced
Unofficial truces started all through the western front where neither the allies or the central powers would attack. Some records indecate the Germans and Brithish shared food and different storys. In some places the Germans were forced to fire on the Brithish by their superiors. Some say the Germans even warned them to keep their heads down. -
The Lusitania was sunk
The Lusitaina had many U.S. citizens abord the vessel and was sunk by a German U-Boat. This ultimatly put America who was unprepared at the time into the war. The sinking of the Lusitania was a call to arms in America, and many wanted Germany to pay. -
Allies started evacuation of their troops from Gallipoli
After a uncordinated invasion, the Allies were forced to retreat from Gallipoli. The invasion was ruined by bad weather when warships from Britain and Russia moved in. The invasion left 250,000 Allied soldiers dead. Around the same number of Turkish soldiers were either dead or injured. -
Romania joined the war with the Allies
Romania joins the allies or "Tripple Entente" in August 1916. they joined because they wanted so seize Transylvania because for most of the population it was a historical place. Around 220,000 Romanian soldiers died before they took control of Transylvania. -
1916 election
The 1916 election consisted of only two partys, because the third party system more the less going out of style. Wilson was up for re-election with the slogan "He kept us out of war". He was running against Thomas R. Marshall. The election was so close Wilson was so sure he had lost he retired early to his bed. News papers even assumed he had won, but Wilson had won the state of California by 4000 votes. -
The Zimmerman Note
Britain intercepted a coded telegram from Germany asking mexico to start a two front war with the United States. In return Mexico would get back the territory they had lost in the mexican american war. Although it never happend, this outraged the American public and is one cause for why the United States entered the war. -
Russian Revolution
A series of revolutions in Ruissa in 1917. This ended the Autocracy, then began the Soviet Union. The Tsar was killed and replaced by a Provisional Government, during the first Revolution. During the second revolution the Provisinal Government was replaced by a Communist (Bolshevik) Government -
Selective Service Act
thought up on December 1916 and brought to President Woodrow Wilsons attention after the war started; and the changed friendship with germany, At the time America had a very small Army compared to the powers in Europe. The act granted the U.S.A. to train more soldiers. The act was ended after the wars end. -

Espionage and Sedition Act
The Espionage and Sedition Act basicaly extended the Espionage act of 1917. This act coverded a wider range of offences. Such as Profanity towards the President, would now be considered a threat to the President. It also made it illegal to destroy, the U.S. flag or its legal tender. -

Originaly called "Armistice day" marked the end of the "war to end all wars". This day honored all World War one veterans and what they did. later it was changed to honor all veterans who ever enlisted. -
Schenck V. United States
Schenck V. United States was brought to the supreme court after the Espionage Act of 1917. The Supreme court upheld the ruling, the Espionage Act made it illegal to to speak out against the draft. Freedom of speach was eased even more in 1969 Imminent lawless action act. -
Treaty of Versailles
signed five years after Archduke Franz Ferdinands assassination. The treaty ended the war between Germany and the Enetene powers. It was Registered six months after the actual war ended. After several revisions and six months later it was signed at the Paris Peace Conference. It was Registered by the league of nations on October 21, 1911.
