  • Britain & France declare war on Germany

    Britain and France are at war with Germany after the invasion of Poland two days before. Britain and France had sworn to invade Poland. So honoring their guarantee of Poland's borders they declare war.
  • Japanese Invade Pearl Harbor

    Japs planes attacked the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. They attacked using bombers, torpedo bombs, and midget submarines. This killed more than 2,300 Americans and demolished the American battleship U.S.S.
  • U.S declares war on Japan

    President Roosevelt asks U.S. congress to declare war on Japan after the attack at Pearl Harbor. After his ten minute speech he signed the declaration at 4:10 pm wearing a black arm band to symbolize the loss of the American soldiers at Pearl Harbor.

    One of the most decisive U.S. victories against Japan during WW11 begins. During the four day see and air battle, the U.S. Pacific fleet succeeded in destroying four Japanese aircraft carriers.

    In the final push to defeat axis powers of Italy and Germany. British Commander Bernard Law Montgomery launched an infantry attack at El Alamein. With a massive artillery barrage fired by 900 guns.

    Benito Mussolini, dictator of Italy is voted out of power by his council and arrested upon leaving a meeting with King Vittorio Emanuele. There was no attempt by his fellow fascists to rescue him from the Penal settlement on the island of Ponza where he was sent.

    The invasion of Europe just after midnight, more than 175,000 troops land in Normandy. It includes 4,000 invasion ships, 600 war ships, and 10,000 planes.

    U.S. bombs Hiroshima
    The U.S. B-29 drops an atomic bomb on the Japanese industrial city of Hiroshima. An estimated 100,00 people are killed immediately others will die later from radiation, sickness and burns. On August 9, a second bomb will be dropped.

    Japs Accept Allied Surrender Terms
    Having agreed to surrender on August 14, 1945, Japan formally surrenders, ending World War 11. It was formally signed on September 2, 1945. This brings the World War to a close.
