Suleiman Was Born
He was born on the coast of the Black Sea in Trabzon. His father was Selim I the 9th Sultan to rule the empire. His mother was Aishe Hafsa Sultan. -
Sep 30, 1520
Suleiman begins rule over Ottaman Empire
Selim I died and Suleiman succeeded as the 10th Ottoman Sultan. He was only 26 years old. His early influences came from Alexander the Great because he wanted to expand his empire across the east and west. This encouraged him to maintain and gain strength in his military. -
Aug 1, 1521
Captured Belgrade
The taking of Belgrade was huge in expanding throughout Europe. The Hungarian Kingdom which was located in Belgrade was the only thing standing between the Ottamans and their expansion. The capturing of Belgrade was his first true accomplishment, and was something that his grandfather had tried and failed to accomplish. -

Battle of Mohacs
The Ottaman Empire defeated Louis II of Hungary. The victory collapsed all Hungarian power and resistance, and made the Ottaman Empire the power of Eastern Europe. -

Suleiman recieves first defeat
Charles V and his brother took over Hungry once again. Suleiman tried to defeat the Austrians, but because of bad weather and lack of supplies, Suleiman and his men were forced to retreat twice. -

Suleiman gaines India trade
The trade from India was being controlled by the Portuguese, and this was the one thing holding back the Ottomans from trade. With a strong naval system, Suleiman gained control of the Red Sea which opened up trade for the Empire. -

Ottamans battle the Safavids
The ottaman army tried to take territory in Persia from the Safavids. After many campaigns the Safavids kept shying away from war, and giving up territory. Finally, a treaty was signed allowing the Ottaman to gain control of land and the Safavid to gain control of land. It also stated that both sides had to remain in peace with one another. -

Ottamans lose Persian Gulf
For years the Ottomans ran the seas and their Navy was a strong point. Then their ships were defeated by the Portuguese Empire, and they lost control which was a large downfall to the empire. -
Nov 3, 1565
Siege of Malta
Another large defeat for Suleiman. He invaded the island of Malta and the people of the island defended them selves and their land. It ended up being one of the bloodiest and deadliest battles of the time. The Ottomans ended up losing 30,000 soldiers. -
Sep 6, 1566
Suleiman Dies
Suleiman's death led to the succession of Selim II. His legacy was very strong, and at the time his empire was the largest it had ever been in Ottaman history. He also rebuilt the law system.
