George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, at Popes Creek in Westmoreland County, Virginia, and was the first of six children of Augustine and Mary Ball Washington. -
Early life
Augustine Washington died in 1743 when George Washington was 11 years old. Washington inherited Ferry Farm and ten slaves; his older half-brother Lawrence inherited Little Hunting Creek and renamed it Mount Vernon. Washington did not have the formal education his elder brothers received at Appleby Grammar School in England, but he did learn mathematics, trigonometry, and land surveying. He was a talented draftsman and map-maker. -
Another loss
9 years after George's fathers death, his half-brother Lawrence got sick and died too in July 1752. -
Mount Vernon
2 years after Lawrence loss, when George was just 22 years old he became full owner of Mount Vernon. -
French and Indian war
The French and Indian war started in 1754 and ended in 1763. George Washington was participating in the war. When the war ended George Washington returned to Mount Vernon and wrote his experiance about the war that made him famous. -
Marriage and family
On January 6, 1759, Washington, at age 26, married Martha Dandridge Custis, 27-year-old wealthy widow and started a family at Mount Vernon. They raised John Parke Custis (Jacky) and Martha Parke (Patsy) Custis, children from her previous marriage, and later their grandchildren Eleanor Parke Custis (Nelly) and George Washington Parke Custis (Washy). -
