Wilbur Wright was born April 16, 1867 in Millville, Indiana. -
Orville's Birth
Orville Wright was born August 19, 1871 in Dayton, Ohio. -
Mother's Death
Susan Wright, Wilbur and Orville's mother, dies July 4, 1889. -
Bicycle Shop
Orville and Wilbur open a bicyle shop. It gave them funds to pay for early experiments. -
Wing Warping
The Wright brothers build and fly a byplane kite to test wing-warping. -
Octave Chanute
Wilbur writes to an areonautical pioneer and civil engineer named Octave Chanute. The two become close friends. Chanute dies in 1910. -
First Kitty Hawk Experiment
The Wright brothers start experimenting with a large glider in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. During the time they stay there, from fifty to one-hundred flight are made covering about twenty to four hundred feet before landing. -
Second Kitty Hawk Visit
The brothers have recently completed a new glider, and increase their longest flight distance to 622 feet. -
First Powered Flight
The brothers complete the first successful flight in a controlled, powered, heavier than air machine. It lasts 12 seconds, and travels 120 feet. -
Announcement to Press
On January 5, 1904, the brothers announced to the Associated Press of sucess of their flights. -
Wilbur's Death
Wilbur Wright died May 30, 1912, in Dayton, Ohio, from typhoid fever. He lived to be 45 years old. -
Orville's Death
Orville Wright died January 30, 1948 in Dayton, Ohio, his bithplace, from suffering a second heart attack. He was age 76.
