Germans Invade Denmark and Norway
Several countries thought that signing a non- agression pact with Hitler would help. They were wrong. Hitler said that he had to preotect the two countries, so he invaded them. That logic is just blatantly stupid, but I think that many countries were too scared to admit it. -
Germans Invade the Low Countries
Using the same excuse he used on Scandinavia, Hitler decided to invade Belgium and the Netherlands. Once again, the blitzkrieg surprised the victims and rendered them helpless. Queen Wilhelmina had to escape to Britain, while Leopold of Belgium refused to leave. The Germans would later use occupied Belgium to plow through France around the Maginot Line. -
Dunkirk Evacuation
The Germans were at it again with an invasion of France and some small countries. Operation Dynamo was an escape plan that salvaged hunderds of thousands of soldiers by taking them from Dunkirk, a port city. They sailed over to England, where they would live to fight another day. Now, all of mainland Europe except Switzerland and Soviet Russia would be up for grabs by Germany. -
France Surrenders
The Nazis captured France, a major allied country. The French had a large wall on the French- German border called the Maginot line. However, the crafty Nazis invaded France from the Belgian border. The French signed the peace treaty on the same train car that the Germans surrendered on during World War One -
British Victories in Tobruk and Egypt
The British were able to remove Italy from Egypt, and they liberated Tobruk. This was a threat to the Axis Powers, who were getting the pasta beaten out of them. The Germans had to send in the Afrika Korps. The desert fox (Erwin Rommel) took command and lost after some brutal fighting. -
Germans Invade Yugoslavia and Greece
Hitler decided to take some more small countries. His excuse this time was that he needed to liberate the German- speakers in those countries. The British helped fight back Hitler's blizkrieg, but they lost in the end. Now, Hitler owned almost all of Europe. -
Americans begin Manhattan Project
The Manhattan Project was a secret program to develop nuclear weapons before the Nazis. This science proved useful during the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which kept the Americans from having to invade Japan. Unknown to the Allies, Hitler cancelled his nuclear program, declaring it a "Jewish science". What a moron. -
Pearl Harbor
It was looking like a peaceful Hawaiian Sunday until the Japanese sneak- attacked us in Pearl Harbor. This attack wiped out much of our navy, but we knew that we had to fight to the end. America declared war on Japan and Germany. The sleeping giant of America was finally awakened. -
Douglas MacArthur leaves the Phillipines
The Japs invaded the Phillipines shortly after their stunt at Pearl Harbor. The Japanese brutalized the American soldiers left there. The Bataan death march starved and killed thousands. However, MacArthur was unfazed, and he delared, "I will return." Later on, he did, and he got his revenge on the evil Japanese. -
Battle of Midway
Less than six months after the Pearl Harbor attack, the Battle of Midway was a very decisive battle. The Japanese tried to lure American aircraft carriers into a trap to eliminate them. However, American codebreakers were able to find out their motives and outfox the Japanese. This battle was a turning point for America in the Pacific. -
Germans Begin Stalingrad Operation
Hitler decided to invade Russia. I have no clue why he did that, but then again, why did he do any of the psychotic things that he did? Either way, he was gaining ground and winning at this time. However, Russia is a large, sparse country, and the Russians can wait out any invaders until they freeze to death in the Winter. This happened to the Germans, marking the turning point on the Western campaign. -
Second Battle of El Alamein
The Second Battle of El Alamein was a very important battle in driving the Germans out of North Africa. Led mainly by British- controlled forces of Bernard Montgomery, the Allied troops wiped out the last stand of "Desert Fox" Erwin Rommel. The Suez Canal and the Middle- Eastern oil fields were held. Also, it was the first major allies victory since the war began, making it a morale- boosting victory. -
D- Day
D- Day was a huge allied landing in Nazi- controlled Normandy. Despite being heavily fortified and prepared for attack, the Americans and British broke the German lines and poured into France. The allies tricked the Germans into thinking that they would land in Calais, and when the allies landed, the Germans were convinced that it was just a trick to draw troops away fron Calais. Also, the tanks in Germany were exclusively controlled by Hitler, and everyone was afraid to wake him up. -
Germany Surrenders
On this day, Germany surrendered to the Allies, ending the conflict in Europe. Germany and Berlin were divided up between America, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. The Americans, French, and British made their land into West Germany, an independent, capitalist state. However, the evil Soviets held on to East Germany and East Berlin, making them a part of their communist state. -
Hiroshima Bombing
The Allies had already made Germany capitulate, but Japan was being a stubborn little thing. They would not surrender, and the U.S. did not want to risk losing so many lives landing in Japan. Nagasaki Bombing
The B- 29 named "Bockscar" (I spelled that right) bombed a major port city, Nagasaki. It contained many industries and people, and previous bombings on it did only a bit of damage. They dropped a plutonium bomb (nicknamed "Fat Man") on the city. This bombing convinced the Japanese to surrender. -
Japan Surrenders, WWII Ends
