    HItler invades Poland and drags Britain and France into the war as they signed a pact with Poalnd to protect them after WWI after this Italy and Japan made allegancies with Nazi Germany and America and Russia allied with Britain. In 1941 Hitler marched on France and the French surrendered in 9 days. Then in 1942 Hitler marched on Stalins Russia. This was the turning point in the war. Hitler had looked too powerful and still nearly deafeated Russia but Stalin did not give in and beat the Nazis

    4,000,000 axis troops, aided with 600,000 vehicles and 750,000 horses invaded the USSR. The Germans took Ukraine, one of the most economically important areas of the Soviet Union. The failure of the operation led to other failed attacks on Russia. This also opened up the Eastern front. 3,000,000 Russian prisoners of war were captured in 1941.

    Siege of Leningrad

    The Siege of Leningrad was an operation in which the German Army Group North were trying to take Leningrad, killing over 1,000,000 city residents in the process. The plan was to starve the city of resources such as food, coal and oil. This along with bombing of the city by the Germans, led to many people dying. In 1942 alone, over 600,000 Russians died. Conditions got a bit better by the end of the siege as people started getting food and electricity cables were run under Lake Ladoga.

  • Battle of Midway

    At 10.26am on 4 June 1942 the course of World War Two in the Pacific changed utterly. At that moment 37 Douglas Dauntless bombers from the USS Enterprise peeled off into a dive attack on two Japanese aircraft carriers. Within minutes both ships were ablaze, their death throes punctuated by the explosion of fuel lines, badly stowed ordnance and aircraft petrol tanks.     From 1-27 of July, it was a battle of the Western Desert Campaign. It was fought on the northern coast of Egypt between Germany and Italy, was a stalemate.
  • Operation Blue

    Operation Blue was the codename of the attack ordered by Hitler on the Russian oil fields in the Caucasus region. . If the oil fields were taken, the USSR would not be able to stand, and would consequently fall. On the 22nd of July, 1942, the attacks started. It started off very well, as with Barbarossa, and Hitler believed that too many troops were being used. He took all of his troops out of there, and focused his attacks on Stalingrad.

    The Battle of Java (Invasion of Java, Operation J) was a battle of the Pacific theatre of World War II. It occurred on the island of Java from 28 February-12 March 1942. It involved forces from the Empire of Japan, which invaded on 28 February 1942, and Allied personnel. Allied commanders signed a formal surrender at Japanese headquarters at Bandung on 12 March.

    In 1943 the allies capture Sicily and the majority of Italy surrendered. However the north, led by Mussolini still fought against the allies until 1945 when he was captured shot and hung at a petrol station in Milan for war crimes. Also in 1945 America dropped two A-bombs on JApan causing them to surrender. This left Germany. The allies marched on Berlin freed the prisoners in the concentration camps. Hitler knew all was lost and shot himself. In Germany they see Hitler as a national shame.
  • Operation Nordlicht (1942)

    Operation Nordlicht was a plan launched Germany to capture the city of Leningrad after a year long battle for Leningrad between the Russians and Germans on the Eastern front. The operation was supposed to start on 23rd August 1942 however the Russians launched The Sinyavino Offensive on 19th August 1942 in an attempt to stop Germany from taking over the city which delayed the Germans. The plan by the Russians failed but it delayed and cancelled the German mission to invade Leningrad.

    American commanders favored Operation Sledgehammer, landing in Occupied Europe as soon as possible, the British commanders believed that such a course would end in disaster. An attack on French North Africa was proposed instead, which would clear the Axis powers from North Africa, improve naval control of the Mediterranean Sea and prepare for an invasion of Southern Europe in 1943.
