  • Executive Order 9066

    Executive Order 9066
    The Executive Order 9066 was issued by Franklin Roosevelt. It stated that all people who were maybe a threat to national security on the West Coast were to move to relocation centers further inland. In the next 6 months, over 100,000 people of Japanese descent moved into the relocation centers. The places where they moved to were called internment camps. They had no space, they were fenced in, and the camp was guarded.
  • The Bataan March

    The Bataan March
    Tens of thousands of Filipino and American soldiers were surrendered to the Japanese. The Japanese made the soldiers march for days in the terrible heat through the Philipine jungles for 63 miles. Many of the soldiers died during the march but the ones who survived were sent to prison or war camp.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    D-Day is a day in history when 160,000 Allied troops attacked Normandy, France. They wanted to attack Europe so that they could get to Hitler and stop him. It was a hard fought battle because there were a lot of Nazi's that were all around the 50 mile coastline of Normandy's beaches. Around 10,000 Allied soldiers died, but more than 100,000 troops finished the day out and marched successfully to defeat Hitler.

    When Auschwitz was going to be liberated, the Germans knew that the Soviets were coming. The Germans started murdering a lot of people. They shot the sick prisoners and tried to blow up any evidence that would prove them to be guilty. When Auschwitz was liberated, there were more than 7,000 starving survivors that were now going to be free.

    Raising the flag on Mount Suribachi
    The United States used an island-hopping strategy to defeat Japan and as part of that strategy, they attacked Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima was heavily fortified and had lots of casualties by the time it was over. The top of Mount Suribachi was an important place in the war. After the US took it over, they put a flag at the top of the mountain. They soon realized that the flag was not big enough to see from a distance. So, they put a different one on while having photographers capture the great moment.

    Bombing of Hiroshima
    America was getting very tired of Japan and wanted them to surrendor. Because of this, America dropped the world's first deployed atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Many people say this wasn't right, but we did warn Japan of utter destruction if they didn't surrendor. This dropping of the bomb killed 90% of the people in the city of Hiroshima.
