    Hitler Inades Poland
    Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany, invaded Poland in September 1939. He had recently gained control over Austria and Czechoslovakia without a fight because Britain and France practiced appeasement. Britain and France made agreements with Hitler trying to prevent another World War. Hitler broke agreements such as the Munich Pact by taking more land. Once Hitler invaded Poland, Britain and France quickly declared war on Germany, which officially started World War Two in Europe.

    On May 10, 1940 German troops invaded France. France was the first country that put up a real fight in battle. Despite the efforts of the French and British troops the Germans managed to take control on less than two months.     After France was defeated by the only country left to take over in Western Europe was the U.K. The Battle of Britain was Hitler's first phase of taking over the U.K. Hitler and his military advisers wanted to gain air superiority over the U.K. by destroying its airfields, factories, and planes. This would allow German troops to invade from the English Chanel. The German Luftwaffe conducted bombing raids and attacked fighter planes. The Royal Air Force won the battle, preventing the invasion.

    On December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked the U.S. Navel base at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The attack consisted of 360 planes lunched from 6 aircraft carriers in the Pacific. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor trying to disable the U.S. pacific fleet so it didn’t pose a threat to the expansion of the Japanese Empire in the Pacific. On December 8th FDR asked Congress to declare war on Japan and its allies. This brought the U.S. into World War 2 in both Europe and the Pacific.

    The Battle of Midway was an extremely important American victory against the Japanese Navy. The battle took place only 6 months after Pearl Harbor. The United States lost one aircraft carrier, but Japan lost 4 aircraft carriers and 250 planes. This severely weakened the Japanese Navy.From this point on the Americans went on the offensive. The U.S. troops fought from island to island pushing the Japanese back toward Japan.

    The Battle of Stalingrad was on of the most significant battles of World War Two. This battle was a real turning point for the Allies because it stopped the German advance in Eastern Europe. Germany lost a significant number of troops and never again made any victories on the eastern front. After Stalingrad the Soviets began to chase the Nazis back to Germany. This caused many Germans to begin to lose faith in Hitler.

    On June 6, 1944 more than 4,4000 ships carrying thousands of soldiers, vehicles, and other supplies crossed the English Channel and landed on 5 Beaches in Normandy France. This operation was designed to relieve the Soviets in Eastern Europe by forcing Germany to fight on two different fronts. Before the landing took place on the beaches airborne troops were dropped behind enemy lines and fought to prevent enemy backup from reaching the beaches. D-Day started the Alied push to Berlin.

    Battle of the Bulge
    The Battle of the Bulge earned its name from the bulge that the last German offensive mad in the lies of the allies. Hitler devised a plan to split the allies in half and two capture key supply points. Hitler wanted to force the allies out of Western Europe so he could use all available resources to stop the Soviet advance in the east. The battle started in December 1944 and ended in 1945.
    After the battle ended the Alies countinued their push to Germany.

    Scientist in America had been working on development of an atomic weapon for many years. After a successful test in the U.S. President Truman was informed. He decided to use the bomb against Japan to save American lives that would be lost in an invasion. On August 6, 1945 Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima. When Japan didn’t surrender Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki. These bombs ended the war but it also started an arms race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

    Germany surrendered on May 7,1945,but the Allies Still had to defeat Japan. Japan didn’t surrender until after the Soviet Union invaded Manchuria and the U.S. dropped two atomic bombs. After the second atomic bomb Japan surrendered. The official ending of World War 2 took place when Japan formally surrendered on the onboard the U.S.S. Missouri. This marked the end of World War Two and the Allies’ victory.
