Benito Mussolini becomes dictator of Italy
As Hitler rose to power in Germany; Mussolini did the same in Italy. Mussolini relied on Hitler to back up his leadership. Mussolini was only given a weeks notice before WWII -
Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany
Hitler was appointed Chancellor and began the Third Riech. He titled himself Fuhrer and built the Nazi party. Hitler had a downtrodded Germany behind him to start a war against the Jews because they needed someone to blame. -
Hitler Remilitarizes Rhineland
Violating the Treaty of Versallies Hitler decided to expand his forces into the Rhineland This area was ment to be a buffer for the bordering country and it being taken over allowed Hitler to expand even further. -
Germany annexes Austria
German troops marched into Austria to unite their forces with the Third Riech When Austria was taken Hitler was forced to appoint some Austrian Nazis to his cabinet. -
Munich Pact
A settlement reached between Britan, Germany, France and Russia. The Britan, France and Russia agreed to appease Germany and allowed them to take over Sudetenland. -
Germany invades Poland
Hitler was still not satisfied with the land he had gained, so he decided to bombard Poland with his forces. Germany invading Poland was the start of the Second World War. -
Germany conquers France
France had declared war on Germany following their attack of Poland. Nine months after it started the "Phoney War" ended with Germany taking France. -

Britian and Canda- 3,241 and 90,000 Civilian Casualites.
Germany and Italy- 6,235 and 40,000 Civilian Casualities.

This battle showed that Germans could be stopped and gave Britain a confidence boost. -
Germany, Italy, and Japan form the Axis Powers

Lend-Lease Act
This act gave FDR full control to direct material aid to Europe. This act made sure that FDR sending support to Europe didn't affect the United States stance of neutrality. -

The United States enters the war
<ahref='https://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/media_fi.php?MediaId=153' >The US finally decided to end it's period of isolationism and join the effort against Germany and Japan.</a> America's decision was made because Japan sent a bomb to one of America's military bases. Pearl Harbor was tragic event that forced America to see the threat the whole world faced. -

Operation Torch
The plan of the Allies to open a second front against their enemies. Different operations were proposed including one to compleletly take over French North Africa however this plan won out. -
Tehran Conference
The leaders of America, Great Britian and Italy met to make decisions of war. This conference lasted five days and they made very many decisions one of the most important was the decisions of what to do next in the war. -
Yalta Conference
The second war time meeting of the leaders of America, Britian and Italy. During this meeting the leaders decided to demand Germany's unconditional surreder. -
V-E Day
This day was Europe's day of victory, it came earlier than anticipated because Hitler commited suicide during the Battle of Berlin. The term V-E Day exsted well before the day came in anticipation of the victory. -
The atomic bomb is dropped on Hiroshima
This was the first atomic bomb dropped ever and Hiroshima was the target for this bomb that caused Hiroshima to be uninhabitable. The bomb whipped out 90% of the population and the fallout killed the rest. -
The atomic bomb is dropped on Nagasaki
Three days after the first atomic bomb was dropped a second was sent to destroy Naqasaki. An estimated 40,000 people were killed by this A-bomb and the Emperor of Japan was forced to surrender. -
V-J Day
This event falls on different days for different countries but no matter what the date, this was the day that Japan was defeated and the war finally ended. September 2nd was the day that a formaly surrender was issued and August 14/15th was the day that Japan stopped fighting. -

Nuremberg Trials
These trials held main members of the Third Riech responsible for what they had done. Many of the top tier members had commited suicide well before the trails had even began. -
Taft-Hartley Act
This act was the first major revision to the Wagner Act. This act affected labor unions and labor laws, it forbade strikes and boycotts. Closed shops were banned along with the check off system. -
Warsaw Pact
This pact was set up to protect the countries that had signed it, if one of them got into trouble the others had to send military support. This pact was a response to NATO allowing West Germany to join and remilitarize.
