The Senate declared war with Great Britain by a vote of 19-13. President James Madison signed the legislation the next day, June 18, 1812. This marked the first time the United States of America declared war on someone else. -

Germans Fire
"The Germans fire shells with chlorine gas at Allied lines. This is the first time that large amounts of gas are used in battle, and the result is the near-collapse of the French lines. However, the Germans are unable to take advantage of the breach." -
Sinking of the Lusitania
Germans had warned the British that their passage liners were in danger, however England still went on with having the Lusitania sail from New York to England. In result of this, the boat was taken down by a German U-boat torpedoed. The ship had 2000 on board and sunk in 18 minutes leaving 1200 dead (including 128 Americans). They later found out the ship had been carrying secret cargo of war materials. -
First Tanks
The British use the first tanks used in battle, at Delville Wood. They were useful at breaking through barbed wire and clearing a path for the infantry. -

Democratic Woodrow Wilson defeated Republican Charles Evan Hughes in the electoral college 277–254. -
Zimmerman Note
1914-spring of 1917
European nations participated in conflict WW1. The US remained neutral, however events in 1917 caused this to change. "In 1917, British cryptographers decoded a telegram from German foreign minister to Mexico Von Eckhardt that caused the US to go to war." The note states that if Germany went to war with the US, Germany would help Mexico recover territory it had lost during the 1840s, including Texas, New Mexico, California, and Arizona. -
Wilson asks for Declaration of War
President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war against Germany. His claim was that “The world must be made safe for democracy.” Congress voted in favor of a war four days after. -
Congress passes the Espionage Acts
made it a crime for any person to convey information intended to interfere with the U.S. armed forces prosecution of the war effort or to promote the success of the country’s enemies. Anyone found guilty of such acts would be subject to a fine of $10,000 and a prison sentence of 20 years. -

United States signs separate peace treaties with Germany, Austria, and Hungary
Congress came to a resolution declaring the end of the war. "The U.S claimed its right to the privileges granted the other Allied nations in the Treaty, but assumed no corresponding obligations. In late August, separate treaties were concluded with Germany, Austria and Hungary." -

As a response to Hitler’s invasion of Poland, Britain and France (both allies) declare war on Germany.
