  • Pearl Harbor

    Japan attacked the U.S. partially because of the stop of trading with them. This is when FDR asked congress to declare war on Japan. The war had begun for America and production of war goods was at its peak. The economy had been boosted and women were put to work in factories.

    Battle of Stalingrad

    A battle between Germany and Russia. Germany was in full retreat. It is not clear why Hitler wanted to take over Stalingrad however, it was Russias center of communication and manufactoring. During this time the Russians were still devastated by the previous blitzkrieg during Operation Barbarossa.
  • D-Day

    More than 160,000 Allied forces were on the beaches of Normady, France. More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft were used during D-Day. More than 9,000 allies were killed or wounded. This started a long journey to eventually defeat Hitler.

    Battle of the Bulge

    It was the largest battle fought on the Western Front in Europe during World War II. it is also the largest battle ever fought by the United States Army. It was a German plan to wedge between the American and British armies in France. 90,000 Allies died and 100,000 Germans died. The Allies took the victory in the Battle of the Bulge.

  • The Bombing of Hiroshima

    The first atomic bomb dropped. The explosion wiped out 90% of the city immediately. It killed 80,000 people. The atomic bombs name was "Little Boy" and was a plutonium gun type bomb. It exploded 2,000 feet above Hiroshima and still caused mass destruction.
  • The Bombing of Nagasaki

    This was the second and last bomb dropped in Japan. Within two days Japan surrendered. There were 87,000 deaths and 70% of the city's industrial zone was destroyed. The U.S. also wanted to make a point to other countrys such as Russia that we weren't playing any games.

    A military pact by the Soviet Union and its allies. This was in response to the NATO pact that the Allied Powers had formed. In the 1980s when the USSR was deminishing and communism fell the Warsaw Pact ended in Prague 1991
