Holocaust
During WW2, Adolf Hitler was a large anti-Semite. Because of this hatred, he created concentration camps to take all the Jews in the countries that they have conquored. After the Germans were defeated, they named this horrible time the Holocaust. Fun Fact:2/3's of the Jewish people in Europe were taken. -

World War II broke out in Europe when Germany invaded Poland. Hitler invaded Poland to regain lost land from WWI. -

Brunswick Shipyard
This shipyard was one of two important shipyards during the time of WW2. This shipyard produced 99 ships. Out of those, 85 were Liberty Ships.
Fun Fact: This gave 16,000 Ameircans jobs. -
Lend-Lease
The lend-lease program was a program under the US during World War 2. The US gave Free France, the UK, China, and eventually the USSR food, oil and other supplies between 1941 and 1945. The main idea was to keep the allies safe.
Fun Fact: The president during this time was FDR. -
Pearl Harbor
On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, which was an active military base. Japan intended to attack to stop the US from bringing supplies to the UK. This caused the US to join WWII. Fun Fact: Pearl Harbor is now a museum. -
Bell Aircraft
The Bell Aircraft company founded on July 10, 1935. The Bell Aircraft only became useful in war in 1942-1943 when the P-39 war jet. These were used a lot in air-to-air combat.

Savannah Shipyard
The Savannah is 1 of the 2 major shipyards in Georgia. This shipyard produced 88 ships for the navy, even though they only ordered 36 ships. This shipyard ran for three years during WW2. Fun Fact: This provided many jobs to African Americans not in the war. -
D-Day
D-Day was the day that the Americans rushed the waters of Normandy. Over this 50 mile strech of beach, American, Britsh, and Canadian forces attacked the Germans to liberate Northern France. This was one of the key wins in WW2 for the Allies. Fun Fact: Was supposed to happen on June 5, but due to weather delay, Eisenhower delayed the attack by 24 hours. -
Yalta Conference
In early Feburary 1945, three of the biggest figures in the world, Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and FDR met. They all met to make decisions such as demanding Germany's surrender. Stalin also agreed to have free elections in all of East Europe. Fun Fact: After this, they scheduled another meeting LA to create the UN. -
Hitler's Death
On April 30, 1945 Hitler killed himself by gunshot. His wife also committed suicide by taking cyanide. After their deaths, they were both cremated and their ashes were scattered. -
Bomb dropped on Hiroshima
The USA dropped a uranium bomb on Hiroshima, which this is forcing Japan to surrender in WW2. During the bombing, 7 planes flew over Hiroshima, and Enola Gay, a plane name, dropped the bomb. The bomb killed 90,000-146,000 people. Fun Fact: The bomb's name was "Little Boy" -
Bomb dropped on Nagasaki
The USA dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki three days after Hiroshima to force Japan's surrender. The original target was Kokura, but weather difficulties changed their target to Nagasaki. The bomb killed about 39,000-80,000 people. Fun Fact: The bomb's name was "Fat Man". -
The UN was formed
The UN was created on October 24, 1945 to create worldwide cooperation. It was also created to not have another World War. The main countries were the USSR, UK, USA, and China. Fun Fact: The UN headquarters are in New York City. -

Baby Boomers
The Baby Booming was the post-WW2 period of time when all the soldiers came home and had babies. Approximately 3.4 million babies were born about nine months after the US won WW2. These babies are now about 51 to 70 years old. Fun Fact: By 1964, there were 76.4 million baby boomers! -

Richard B. Russell's Trip around the World for WW2
Richard B. Rusell spent many years in the Georgia government. He was in the senate for 38 years and he was also governor. During WW2, he led a group of 5 senators around the world to visit the war theaters and to report the status of the troops. Fun Fact: His father was a judge.
