It started with the battle of Stalingrad in the summer before when the soviet forces attacked. Von Paulus, the leader of the troops was ready to give up but Hitler told him not to surrender. When he did finally surrender out of the 280,000 men in his control half were dead or dying. -

VE Day (Germany Surrenders)
This was when the countries accepted that the German Nazis surrendered. On the 30th of April, Hitler had comminted suicide sending the Nazi party into a blind panic before they just gave up and surrendered. VE stands for Victory in Europe.
