Liberation of Paris
Jaques Lecerlc enters and frees the French capital triumphantly. Although some German forces remained, Paris was free from the German control. Two days before a French armored division began to approach the capital, but the German's were still countering them. On August 25, they went in and freed Paris. The were about 23,000 Japanese army and navy fighting but after a month of fighting, the Americans were successful in raising the American flag in victory. Death of FDR
During his fourth term in office FDR passed away, leaving President Truman to fight the second World War. He passed away from massive cerebral hemorrhage. "Death" of Hitler
Hitler committed suicide.
He had perviously repaired his a bunker after deciding to stay in Berlin during the final stages of the war. He was warned that the Russians were only a day or so away from them. Germany Surrenders
The German commander unconditionally signed the surrender of all his German forces to the Allies. He had to hoped to limit the surrender of his forces to just those fighting the Western Allies but failed. It was demanded that all his forces would surrender or else they would not have a second chance to do so. Atomic Bomb #1
The world's first atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima by America and wiped out about 90% of the city. Atomic Bomb #2
3 days after the previous bombing, America dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki which resulted in Japan's surrender. The second bombing took place because the first one was not enough to convince the Japanese War Council with an unconditional surrender. About 60,000 to 80,000 people were killed or disintegrated. Japan Surrenders
The Japanese formally surrender to the Allies aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. During the Summer of 1945, their navy and air force were defeated and by the end of June, America had captured a Japanese island.
