The Allied attack on Normandy in hopes of weakening Germany and re-capturing Paris. -
Battle of Leyte Gulf
The largest naval battle ever fought; the Allies supplied a large number of ships and destroyed nearly every Japanese vessle. -

The German military would break through Allied defense. -
Yalta Conference
The "Big Three" met in order to discuss the ending of the war and the peace to follow. -
Battle of Owkinawa
After retreating to the southern tip, Japan came back in an effort to defend the island. Americans gained control of the island in June. -
V-E Day
Victory in Europe Day. Karl Donitz would surrender on behalf of Germany, ending the war in Europe. -
Potsdam Conference
The same "Big Three" met to try and resolve the fear of communism spreading and Stalin gaining more power. -
Hiroshima Bombing
The first American Atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Nearly 80,000 residents were killed upon impact. -

This was the day that the Allies declared victory over Japan. -

The official surrender would take place upon the U.S.S Missouri.
