Invasion of Russia
Communists, including Stalin, took over Russia. This lead to a civil war and the death of millions of Russians. Stalin later took over when Lenin died. This brought Russia into the war. -
Mussolini Formed Fascist Party
Mussolini formed the fascist party in March 1919. It promoted nationalism. Fascists became known as "black shirts". They fought in the streets against socialists and communists. They launched a program of terrorism and intimidation against their opponents. -
The Holocaust
The Nazis attempt to kill all Jews under their control. It was a direct result of racist Nazi ideology that considered Aryans superior to others. Nazis established death camps to kill off Jews. The worst was Auchwitz. Without food, water, or sufficient shelter and clothes, its difficult to live. -
German Invasion of Poland
Hitler wanted more power. So he decided to invade Poland. By invading Poland he could get he power that he wanted, only if they surrendered. After a long combat, Warsaw surrendered on Sept. 27, 1939. Then hitler got the power that he wanted. -
Executive Order 8802
This was an order that assured fair hiring practices in any job funded with government. Its not fair to people who don't get a job because of their race or ethnicity. It was the first federal action, though not a law, to promote equal opprotunity for a job. It prohibited employmenyt discrimination in the United States. This was a response to pressure from civil rights activists. -
Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor was Us Navys main Pacific Base. Japan sent 6 aircrafts, and 360 airplanes (28 ships in all and several submarines). Japan attacked in 2 waves. The first was the main attack. Then the second attack was the next day to finish off whatever was left. The objective was to prevent the U.S from influencing Japans war effort in southeast Asia. This stopped us for 6 months. Dec. 8th FDR asked Congress to declare war on Japan. -
Battle of Midway
The Battle of Midway was the turning point of the war of the Pacific. U.S. went on the offensive.The Japanese plan was to lure the U.S.' aircraft carriers into a trap. The Japanese also intended to occupy Midway as part of an overal plan to extend their defensive perimeter.The plan was ruined by faulty reaction and poor initial dispodition. American codebreakers were able to determine the date and location of the attack letting the US be forewarned. Letting the Navy set up an ambush. -
Battle at Stalingrad
Stalingrad was the true turning point of the war in Europe. It ended any realistic plans of Hitler dominating Europe. There, Nazi armies were forced to retreat toward Germany. The Soviet Union went on the offensive after Stalingrad. This is because of time and material resource, which were running out. -
Battle of the Bulge
This was a major offensive launch through the density forestead Ardeenes mountain region. Germany wanted to split the British and American Allied line in half. Once this was done, Hitler could fully concentrate on the Eastern half of the war. This lasted until January 25, 1945. -
Atomic Bomb
The Japanese kept on fighting, even when the war was over. Truman decided to use a new atomic bomb to end the war quickly. The Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. On the ninth, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. Killing a total of more than 118,000 people.
