Japanese attack the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii which was home to the U.S Navy's Pacific Fleet. In the raid, which was a complete surprise, the Japanese sped over Pearl Harbor dropping bombs and torpedoes. It killed over 2,000 Americans and the battleships were destroyed.
