Hitler invades Poland, and two days later, France and Great Britain declare war on Germany. This started World War II. The Axis Powers were Italy, Germany, and Japan. Britain, France, and other countries are knows as the Allies, This is pretty intense because it starts off the War. -
Hitler Gains Control of Western Europe
in 1940, Germany had conquered the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, and Denmark. Within less than a year, Hitler had gained control of nearly all of western Europe. -
Germany Invades yhe Soviet Union
Hitler turned on his ally and invaded the Soviet Union. In winter, the Germans found they were vulernerable to Soviet attacks. WIthout enough supplies, Hitler's troops were defeated and forced to retreat. This was unexpected and pretty interesting because normally the German soldiers would never retreat, but they had to. -
Japan Launches Attack on Pearl Harbor
Japan saw the United States as possible enemies, so Japanese leaders attempted to destroy the U.S. naval fleet in the Pacific. On Decemer 7th, Japan's suprise air attack was launched on the naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This is sad, because thousands of lives were taken and damaged/sunk U.S. battleships. -
United States drops Bombs on Japan
The U.S. dropped the most powerful weapon in the world on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The blast uprooted the city to ashes and destroyed the area surrounding it. 3 days later, another atomic bomb was dropped by th U.S. in the Japanese city of Nagasaki. Nearly 200,000 people were killed and many injured- 5 days later, Japan surrended. While this is sad so many people died, the U.S. beat Japan. -
Allies Invade Europe on D-Day
On the D-Day invasion, allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy in northwestern France. The invasion was a success and the allied troops were able to enter Paris. Later on, with the Soviets attacking Germany from the east, the Nazi's defenses fell apart- Hitler killed himself in April and Germany surrendered. WIth all the deaths and invasions, this event is somewhat sad (just like most the others) but Europe had the victory.
