Germany Annexed Austria
This is the beginning of the war as German soldiers marched into Austria and took it over. Hitler accompanied his troops in Austria and the next day Anschluss was proclaimed. -
Treaty of Munich
Germany met with the major powers of Europe in Munich, Germany. Hitler gained the Sudetenland and promised that he is done expanding. That proves to not be true in the future. -
Non-Aggression Pact
Hitler and Stalin sign a non-aggression pact. This pact kept Germany and the Soviets from fighting each other and it was also for the division of Poland. -
Hitler Invades Poland
Hitler marched his troops into Poland and fought the Polish army. The Polish fell in a couple of weeks and Hitler was getting closer to taking over Europe. -
Battle of Britain
England and Germany clashed in the sky and on foot in London. The Germans were very close to taking over Western Europe but England stood in their way. England withstood the bombing of the Germans and got the victory. -
Hitler Attacks Russia
Hitler sent 3 million soldiers and 3,500 tanks into Russia. The Russians were taken by surprise as they had signed a treaty with Germany in 1939. Russia signed a mutual assistance with Britain and USA supplied weapons to both Russia and Britain. -
Pearl Harbor
The Japanese surprise attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Many U.S. lives were lost and major ships. This is a main reason why the United States enters World War II. -
US and Britain Declare War on Japan.
The United States suffered hard from Pearl Harbor and now they knew they had to enter the war. Britain is a close ally to the US and when one country gets attacked the other goes to war with them. The US will later end up fighting in the Pacific and in Europe. -
The Battle of Midway
The Americans broke the code of the Japanese and caught them off guard. This American victory gave the US an opportunity to move into an offensive position. -
Allies Push Into North Africa
British and American forces under the command of General Dwight Eisenhower landed in the NW of Africa. They took control of the French and slowly closed in on the Germans until they surrendered also. -
D-Day
D-day was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning. 156,000 allied troops attacked the Germans at the beach of Normandy. It was a decisive allied victory. -
The Battle of the Bulge
Hitler tried to split the allied armies by using a surprise Blitzcrieg. The allied forces fought back against the tough Nazis and formed a 'bulge' and held their line. This was Hitler's last offensive push in the war. -
FDR Death
Franklin D. Roosevelt died and was in his fourth term. Harry Truman took over right as the war was coming to an end. He eventually had the say in finishing the war with the atomic bombs. -
The Battle of Berlin
Fought by the Germans and the USSR, the last battle of World War II. They fought at Berlin and the Soviets took a decisive victory in Germany. -
Hitler Commits Suicide
Hitler commited suicide in his bomb proof shelter with his wife. He and his wife took a cyanide capsule and then shot themselves with a handgun. -
German Forces Surrender
General Alfred Jodl of Germany signed an unconditional surrender document for all German forces to the Allies. German forces cease fire and the war was over in Europe. -
Atomic Bomb Dropped on Hiroshima
The Japanese generals refuse to surrender. The United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. The bomb killed around 100,000 innocent lives. -
Atomic Bomb Dropped on Nagasaki
3 days after the first bomb had been dropped, the United States dropped another on Nagasaki. The Japanese did not surrender after the first bomb, so then the U.S. had to drop another. The Japanese surrendered shortly after the second atomic bomb.
