Rape of Nanjing
WHAT: This was mass murder and rape of Chinese people by Japan.
WHY: This was part of Japan taking over China.
EFFECT: This was a step in the taking over China by Japan. -
German Blitzkrieg
WHAT HAPPENED: German forces would heavily bomb the enemy forces for a long period of time, then move in their lane forces.
WHY IT HAPPENED: It was used to disorganize the enemy and unsettle everything so when the land forces moved in, they had little resistance and could quickly take over, saving lives, time, and resources.
EFFECT: It was a devasting tactic that worked ver ysuccessfully in taking over France and any other place the Nazis tried capturing. -
Pearl Harbor
WHAT HAPPENED: On Decemeber 7th, 1941, Japan sent a group of bombers to Pearl Harbor and bombed the U.S. Naval Base to 80% destruction.
WHY IT HAPPENED: The main reason the bombing happened was to destroy as much of the U.S. fleet so there would be no resistance against Japan's plans to conquer Southeast Asia.
EFFECT: 80% of the U.S. Fleet was destroyed and U.S. sooned eantered the war. -
Wannsee Conference
WHAT: This was a conference of all the senior government officials.
WHY: It happened so they could discuss the "Final Solution" eradication.
EFFECT: They effectively set up their plan to eradicate the Jews. -
Baatan Death March
WHAT: The march was of American/Filipino POWs made to walk a great distance by the Imperial Japanese Army.
WHY: The Japanese needed to transfer the POWs to a new location but they also just wanted to be cruel.
EFFECT: Many of the POWs were killed by either the conditions or beatings and the U.S. was not very happy about it. -
Battle of Stalingrad
WHAT: This was when the Germans made one push on Stalingrad, Soviet Union, for control over the capital.
WHY: The Germans would have taken control over the whole Soviet Union if they could take control over Stalingrad.
EFFECT: The Germans were defeated and it cost them drastically in the end of the war. -
Battle of Midway
WHAT: This was a naval battle in the Pacific between the U.S. and Japan.
WHY: This happened because the U.S. and Japan were at war after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
EFFECT: This was the turning point in the war and was vital in defeating Japan. -
D-Day Invasion
WHAT: Attack on the beaches of Normandy by the Western Allies.
WHY: It was the start of the Allies capturing and moving through France to take back France and destroy Germany.
EFFECT: It was a successful U.S. victory and the start of the Allies taking back France. -
Battle of the Bulge
WHAT: It was the last major offensive campaign by the Germans in the Ardennes Forest.
WHY: The point of the attack was the push Allies troops back to get to Belgium, but they couldn't make it.
EFFECT: The attack created a "bulge" in the Allied forces, but not enough to push them back past Belgium. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
WHAT: This was a battle on an island in Japan called Iwo Jima. The U.S. landed and attacked, eventually taking the island over.
WHY: The U.S. was trying to take and destroy as much of Japan as possible to end the war.
EFFECT: This was a stepping stone in eventually destroying Japan and ending the war. -
VE Day
WHAT: This was the end of the war. It was a formal surrender from Germany.
WHY: They called it VE day because it stands for Victory in Europe day.
EFFECT: It effectively ended the war. -
Atomic Bombs:
WHAT: This was when the U.S. dropped 2 atomic bombs of 2 cities in Japan; Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
WHY: The U.S. was trying to limit its number of total casualties and end the war.
EFFECT: It ended the war with Japan. -
VJ Day
WHAT: This was when Japan officially surrendered and ended the war.
WHY: Japan surrendered because the U.S. bombed 2 cities and showed its true power.
EFFECT: It meant the U.S. had won. -
Concentration Camps Liberation
WHAT: This was when the Allies was going through and liberating all the concentration camps they were finding.
WHY: They were releasing all the camps because it was inhumane treatment and cruel and the Jews did not deserve it.
EFFECT: This put an end to Hitler's inhumane treatment of the Jewsh race. -
Battle of Okinawa
WHAT: Battle fought in the Pacific region on an island in Japan called Okinawa.
WHY: It was one of the battles that helped America defeat Japan.
EFFECT: The U.S. wins and gets one step closer to ending the war.
