Germany invaded Poland by surprise and they are quickly defeated. Hitler made the non-aggression pact with Stalin and they agree to not attack each other. This allowed Germany to not have to fight a two front war. This gave Hitler a chance to invade the Soviet Union. -
Germany invades France and captures Paris
September 3rd, France and Britain declare war on Germany. The Fall of France happened when Hitler invaded through Belgium. He did this in May and by June Hitler controls France. This was called the Phony War -
Germany bombs Britain, Battle of Britain invades
Hitler's plan to soften Britain for invasion. Germany bombed Britain for 11 months. The bombing was unsuccessful and after the 11 months Hitler called it off. It was seen as the first major "win" for the allies. -
Americas Lend Lease
The Lend-Lease Act was America's way of helping foreign countries during WWII. U.S. gave Britain war supplies and old naval warships. We did this because Britain gave us military bases in Bermuda and the Caribbean. -
Operation Barbarossa
Operation Barbarossa was a code name the Axis Powers used for the invasion of the Soviet Union. Germany lost and it brought confidence to the Allied Forces. -
Pearl Harbor
Japan was trying to expand and establish an Asian Empire. Japan thought the U.S. was the only thing that stood in their way. America tried to peace talk with Japan, but they would not hear it. Japan bombs Pearl Harbor and in 2 hours, 2,403 are dead and 21 ships are destroyed. -
America declares war on Japan and Germany
Franklin Roosevelt declared that December 7,1941 will be a day which will live in infamy. Germany declares war on the United States and soon after the U.S. declares war on Japan and Germany. Pearl Harbor was the main reason why America joined WWII. -
Bataan Death March
The Bataan Death March was the forcible transfer by the Imperial Japanese Army. 60,000–80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war from Saysain Point, Bagac, Bataan and Mariveles were moved to Camp O'Donnell and other camps. Prisoners were loaded onto trains. -
Battle of Midway
America wins the Battle of Midway against Japan. This was a major turning point in the war. The battle was a naval battle in the Pacific Ocean. -
Battle of Stalingrad
Germany invades the Soviet Union without knowing what they were getting themselves into. The Russians won because of the weather and the poorly prepared Germans. They also had supplies ready. This was a major victory for the war in Europe. -
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
This was an act of Jewish resistance against the German forces in Poland. It opposed Germany's effort to transport the last ghetto to Treblinka. -
D-Day
American troops landed in Normandy, France and began to take back Eastern Europe. This invasion was one of the largest amphibious invasions in history. America and other allied forces began to liberate Europe and take victories. -
Liberation of Concentration Camps
Allied forces went and liberated Jewish and other Concentration Camps. They found out the true horrors of what was really going on inside of them. -
Battle of the Bulge
This was Germany's last major offensive campaign. Germany used the Blitzkrieg tactic again and caught American forces off guard. In the end, Germany was defeated. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
A major battle for the American forces. American troops landed on the island of Iwo Jima and fought the Imperial Japanese forces. America won. -
Nuking Hiroshima and Nagasaki
America nuked these two major Japanese cities in 1945. This forced Japan to surrender and bring an end to World War II. The nukes killed many people and left cities radiated for years.
