Britain was facing the threat of the Germans invading. This was the first major fight conducted by air. The German Luftwaffe attacked British for four months but they could nit beat the Royal Air Force and eventually stopped. -
Invasion of the Soviet Union/ Operation Barbarossa
All of Axis powers except Bulgaria, invade.
Germans were not prepared for the cold winter and the Soviet’s pushed them out. -
Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor is a US Naval base in Hawaii. Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the base on an early Sunday morning. The US placed sanctions on Japan for trading because of their treating of China 2,403 sailors soldiers and civilians were killed. American entered the war. -
Battle of Stalingrad
One of the largest, longest, and bloodiest battles of the war. This was between Russian forces and nazi Germany and the axis powers. Stalingrad was in one of Russia’s most industrial areas and Hitler wanted it. By September the luftwaffe controlled the air. The Germans were not used to the weather conditions and they either starved to death, died in the fighting, or died in prison camps. -
Operation Torch/Allied invasion of French north africa
This was the allies invading north Africa and the first time the British and the US planned and worked together on an invasion plan. They were successful and Darlan signed an armistice with Eisenhower to stop all fighting with the Allies. He was then dishonorably dismissed because Hitler thought the French leaders gave up too easily. -
Battle of Normandy/ Operation Overlord
This was the Allied liberation of Western Europe from the Nazis. Also known as D-Day. It was known as the beginning if the end of war in Europe. Led by Eisenhower the allies tricked the Nazis that they were going to attack somewhere else. They caught them off guard and devastated them. -
Yalta Conference
Roosevelt, Churchill,and Stalin met in Yalta, near the Crimean Peninsula. They felt the war was nearly over and needed a plan. Roosevelt that even if this battle was over they were still in a struggle with Japan. Stalin agreed to join the allies against Japan shortly after Germany surrendered. They agreed to divide into 4 post was occupational zones controlled by the US,British, French, and soviet military. They also wanted Germany to demilitarize and remove nazism.
