Germany Invades Poland; France and Great Britain Declare War on Germany
The Soviet Dictator Stalin signed a pact with Hitler called the "Nonaggression Pact", that stated that Russia and Germany would not engage in warfare for ten years. Soon after, Hitler launched the "Blitzkrieg", which meant "lightening war" on 9/1/1939. He annexed and invaded West Poland while Russia invaded East Poland. Great Britain and France declared war on Germany 2 days later. -
Japan Attacks Pearl Harbor
According to the Japanese, the United States fleet stationed in Hawaii was a "dagger at (their) throats". On December 7th, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and destroyed 19 ships, including 8 battleships, and killed 2,300 soldiers. The next day, President Roosevelt declared war on Japan and its allies, and he called it "a date which will live in infamy". -
Germany Surrenders
The Germans launched one final assualt on the Allied Powers after D-Day, called the "Battle of the Bulge". Germany was defeated, and during its final moments, when Berlin was being hammered by the Soviet Union, Hitler commited suicide underground with his wife Eva. The day that the Germans surrendered was called "V-E-Day", meaning "Victory in Europe Day" because the Japanese had not been defeated yet. -
Allies Use Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The United States first threatened the Japanese by dropping an atomic bomb in New Mexico, and threatening to do the same to Japan. The Japanese did not respond, so the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan. One in Hiroshima, called "Fat Man", and one in Nagasaki called "Little Boy". The Japanese then surrendered, and World War II was over. -
United Nations Formed
There had previously been a "League of Nations" in place, but it was inneffective, and the United States was not a part of it. The United Nations was formed after World War II to replace it.
