    Why: they wanted the territories to acquire the oil and rubber.
    The Outcome: the Japanese won the battle by forcing the United States into World War II.

    Why: the air and sea battle of World War II that crippled the Japanese Combined Fleet.
    The outcome: the Philippines won the battle, therefore, reinforcing the Allies control of the Pacific.
