    Britian evacuated a majority of it's troops, Dutch, French and Belgian soldiers, using 800 British boats. 340,000 allied soldiers were shoved
    back to the beaches of Dunkirk, France, as the Germans became stronger.

    The Battle of Britain

    On the 10th of July in 1940, Hitler's plan Operation Sea Lion was put into action. Winston Churchill, the British prime minister refused to negotiate for peace with his country, which resulted in the invasion of Britain. German troops set off catastrophic air attacks before landing and attacking Britain themselves. Germany killed 15,000 British citizens, targeting convoys of ships, military installations, ports, airfields and cities.

    On the 22nd of June, 1941, Hitler launched Operation Barboarossa in order to attain the conquering of the Soviet Union. Finnish, Italian, Hungarian and Romanian troops and 'volunteers' from 'neutral' Spain joined forced with most of Germany's armed forces and invaded Russia.

    On the 7th of December in 1941, Japan bombed the American fleet at Pearl Harbour. Two British battleships sent by Japanese bombers were sent to Singapore and then sunk. The bombings at Pearl Harbour was America's introduction to the World War.

    On the 8th of December, 1941, The United States of America declared war on the Axis Powers. The Axis Powers consist of Germany, Japan and Italy.

    In late January, 1942, Singapore was threatened by Japanese bombers, which caused SIngapore to slowly fall. Their defence was awfully disorganised, causing the British commander to surrender to the Japanese. The British naval base had fallen on the 15th of February.

    On the 19th of February, 1942, Japan released the first of 64 attacks on Darwin. This was Australia's first fight on Australian soil in the war. 243 people were killed, and there was extensive alarm all over Australia.

    Kokoda Campaign

    The Japanese invaded Port Moresby, in Papua and planned to seize it with two land attacks. The first attack was on the Kokoda track, followed by an attack at Milne Bay. However, Australian troops repelled them on the Kokoda track between July and November in 1942.

    On the 6th of June in 1944, on the beaches of Normandy in France, the Canadian, British and US trooops landed and began driving out the Germans out of western Europe. This day is known as D-Day, codenamed Operation Overlord. D-Day took place at five beaches codenamed; Gold, Juno, Sowrd, Omaha and Utah.

    On the 30th of April, 1945, on the same day Hitler commit suicide, the Allies recover initiative as they enter Berlin. The Soviet trrops captured the Reichstag, which resulted in the captial falling.Adolf Hitler commit suicide underground, inside his bunker.

    Over 1945, the Allies slowly reclaim initiative as they continued in Berlin. On the 7th of May 1945, Germany signed an unconditional surrender, which finally ended war in Europe.

    Atomic Bombing

    On the 6th of August, the US government dropped the first atomic bomb on on the city of HIroshima. The US warned Japan of 'ruin from the air' if JApan did not surrender. On the 9th of August, 1945, the US dropped their secong atomic bomg on Nagasaki. The initial blasts of the atomic bombs killed 115,000 Japanese. However, many years later people were still dying from the exposure to radiation, and children were born with horrible deformities.
  • Japan unconditionally surrendered

    Japan unconditionally surrendered
    On the 14th of August in 1945, Japan accepted unconditional surrender, after the US dropped two atomic bombs into their cities. The formal surrender was signed on the 2nd of September.
