Invasion of Poland
Hitler blitzkrieged (Which is German for Lightning War) Poland and Russia attacked Poland from east. Hitler's troops invaded from north, south, and west. Poland awaited backup from Britain and France, but received very little. This marked the beginning of World War II. Because Britain and France both had pacts with Poland, they declared war on Germany. -
The Tripartite Pact
The Tripartite Pact was also called the Three-Power Pact, Axis Pact, and the Three way Pact. This Pact establishes the Axis Powers of World War II. This pact was signed by Adolf Hitler (Germany), Galeazzo Ciano (Italy) and Saburo Kurusu (Japan). This gave them power during World War II. -
Germany Invades USSR
Germany attacked Russia in June of 1941. Hitler sent three armies into Russia to the north, east, and south. Hitler would not let his men surrender, and most of them died during the brutal winter and from starvation and disease. 91,000 men surrendered to the USSR in 1943, but only 5,000 would ever return to Germany. This attack led to the opening of the eastern front of the war. -
Pearl Harbor
Japan attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor. They attacked in two waves. The first wave was the main attack to take out ships and airfield. The second wave they would finish off whatever was left. The objective was to prevent US from influencing Japan's war effort in southeast Asia. This attack led to FDR asking congress to declare war on Japan on December 8,1941. -
D-Day
More than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. More than 9000 allied soldiers died -
Iwo Jima
US marines invaded the island of Iwo Jima. The United States plan was to take over the island. 5 days later after they started fighting they raised of the U.S. flag on top of the Mount Suribachi by five U.S. Marines and one U.S. Navy battlefield Hospital Corpsman. There were actually 2 flag raisings and both of them were on the same day. The battle lasted till March 26, 1945. -
FDR Dies
Franklin D. Roosevelt died after months of poor health and Harry S. Truman was sworn in as President. The U.S. successfully finished World War 2 under Truman. -
Hitler commits suicide
Adolf Hitler commits suicide by gunshot. Later that day his wife Eva Braun also committed suicide by ingesting cyanide. -
Victory in Europe
On May 7, Germany surrendered in a French schoolhouse that had acted as Eisenhower's headquarters. Americans celebrated Victory in Europe Day. FDR passed a few weeks prior and Harry S. Truman would see the US through the war. At this point, the end of the war was close in sight. -
Atomic Bombing
The Atomic Bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan by the United States. The bombs were dropped by a B-29 Bomber. The Japanese did not surrender after the first bomb, so 3 days later the United States dropped another bomb. These 2 events were the only use of nuclear weapons in war to this day. -
Victory over Japan
The day which Japan surrendered, ending World War 2. The papers were signed on the deck of USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
