Pearl Harbor Attack
In the morning of t day hunds of Japanese planes bombed the naval base in Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. More than 2,000 american soldiers died and another 1,000 were wounded. The next day, Franklin asked the congress to join war, and they did. -
Battle of Midway
Six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor the United States won the major naval battle in the Pacific. Americans were able to decipher the attack and prepare on time. They sunk major ships in Midway and Japan suffered important losses that were irreperable like death pilots and aircraft carriers. Japan could never repair from this battle. -
Battle of El Alamein
It took part in the northern coast of Egypt and was fought between axis powers, mainly Germany and Italy, and the allied powers, mainly Britain. From the central powers it was commanded by General Rommel "desert fox". It resulted in the victory of the allied powers and it drove Germany out of Egypt. They fought over the control of the coast which includes the Suez Canal, a major canal to transport supplies. -
Battle of Stalingrad
It was the victory of the Soviets against the Germans in defending the city of Stalingrad. It is considered by many historians the most important battle since it changed the tide of war in favour of the Allies. The main factor for the German defeat was the extreme cold weather in the city. -
Casablanca Conference
Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill agreed to fight against the axis powers until they surrendered unconditionally. -
Tehran Conference
It was a major conference were Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin agreed the cross-channel invasion and that the Soviet Union was going to declare war on Japan eventually. -
D-Day
It consisted in the invasion of Normany that was occupied by Europe in order to free France from Germany. It was an allied victory in the war. -
Yalta Conference
It was probably the most important conference were once again Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin got together to discuss major issues. They granted the Soviet Union major possession of territories like Poland and other eastern european countries. It also established punitive measures on Germany and that Stalin was about to declare war on Japan. -
Potsdam conference
It was the last conference were the Big Three met and it was the one that lead to the tension between the major powers that would eventually evolve to the cold war. They couldn't agree with Stalin only over minor issues. The most significant agreement was the Potsdam Declaration to Japan that demmanded they must surrender or otherwise Japan was going to be destroyed. -
Bombing of Hiroshima
The United States dropped a nuclear bomb in Hiroshima, Japan. It destroyed almost all the city and it eventually lead to japanese surrender. -
Bombing of Nagasaki
Three days later Nagasaki suffered the same as Hiroshima. Another nuclear bomb was dropped in Nagasaki and Hiroshima resulted in the death of 129,000 people and is the only time nuclear warfare has been used in history.
