From 1934 to 1935, Mao Zedong, lead the communist party on a long march to a full scale retreat to the Chinese Communist Party's second base in Hunan, in order to escape the forces of the Kuomintang, under the rule of General Chiang Kai Shek. -
Germany Invades Poland; France and Britain Declares War on Germany
Germany's forces waged war on Poland the way Hitler intended to: by using a strategy called the "blitzkrieg". This strategy involved an excessive amount of bombing early on in order to destroy areas of importance, followed by a lightning quick invasion of troops, tanks, and artillery. After Germany refused to withdraw troops from Poland, France and Britain declared war on Germany. -
Japan Attacks Pearl Harbor
Early in the morning on the day of the attack, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes bombarded the harbor for two hours. At the end of the two hours, numerous american vessels and eight battleships had been destroyed, along with nearly 200 airplanes. Also, 3,000 american sailors and soldiers were killed or wounded. The next day, president FDR asked Congress to declare war on Japan. -
United Nations Formed
During the war, the major Allied powers agreed to establish a global organization to help mediate internation relationships and affairs. This was first made when U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met to sign the Atlantic Charter. -
Germany Surrenders
General Dwight Eisenhower was prepared to seal off the German forces from the Western front, in order to prevent them from fleeing to the west, unless the German forces agreed to an unconditional, complete surrender from Germany. -
Allies Use Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
After the Allies dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, then Nagasaki on the August of 1945, the emporer of Japan, Hirohito, was forced to an unconditional surrender on the radio.
