Mao Zedong led 100,000 Communists in a 6,000 mile long walk reffered to as the Long March. During this time, thousands died of starvation, exposure, cold, and battle wounds. But they would do anything to keep from being under Jiang Jieshi's Nationalist forces. -
Germany invades Poland; France and Great Britain declare war on Germany
Once Hitler and Stalin signed their nonaggression pact, Hitler created his plans to attack Poland. He gave Germany's newest military startegy a try for the first time. This was called the blitzkrieg or "lighting war." Using tanks, trucks, aircraft, and artillery, Germany conquered Poland's capital, Warsaw, with a surprise attack. During this time, France and Great Britain declared war on Germany but it was too late and Poland had already fallen. -
Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
Even with their codes cracked and their oil shipments cut off, the Japanese didn’t give up on their plan to catch the Uunited States and the European colonial powers. It was on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese began their attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. In a matter of 2 hours, they had sunk/damaged 19 ships, killed 2,300 Americans, and wounded 1,100. Roosevelt stated that is was “a date which will live in infamy.” -
United Nations formed
The United Nations was intended to provide security to the nations of the world and ultimately to prevent any more wars. -
Germany surrenders
It was at his time that the Russians were closing in on Hitler in Berlin. He realized his enemies were getting closer and he had little choice but to commit suicide with his wife. He knew that if they were caught they would face and suffer a worse death. -
Allies use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The US knew Japan was never going to surrender, so they had Robert Oppenheimer attempt to drop an atomic bomb on them. He created the Fatboy and the Littleman which were dropped in Hiroshima nad Nagasaki. These killed thousands of people, and even more died later from the radiation. And finally, after bombing Nagasaki, the US succeeded and got the Japanese to surrender.
