Rise of Fascist dictators in Europe
Mussolini: Italian nationalists were made about eh Paris Peace Treaties. The Italian government seemed powerless so Mussolini stepped in. Hitler was the Fascist leader of Germany. He tried to take control before but failed. A year after being released from prison, he did many speeches and took over Germany. -
Japanese aggression in Asia
Japan thought they should have an empire equal to those of western powers. In 1931, they invaded Manchuria. The League of Nations condemned the attack, so Japan left the league. In 1937, Japanese armies overran much of China -
Annexation of Austria
Hitler engineered the Anschluss (Union of Austria and Germany). He forced the leader of Austria to appoint the Nazis to key cabinet points. He then gave a speech to show his new role as ruler of Austria. -
Munich Conference
British and French leaders gave in to HItler's demand to take over Czechoslovakia. The leaders forced Czechoslovakia to surrender with not fight. In return, Hitler assured the leaders he had no further plans to expand his terrriotry. -
Nazi-Soviet Pact
Hitler made a pact with his enemy Joseph Stalin. In reality, they just agreed to two things. 1) not to fight if the other went to war and 2) divide up Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe. Hitler didn't want to fight WEsern Democracies and the Soviet Union at the same time. -
Phony War
France hid behind the Maginot Line during the 1rst winter of World War II. Britain sent troop to go wait with them. Then in April, the war sprung into action. -
Miracle at Dunkirk
German forces trapped British forces between Nazis and the English Channel. The British sent all available ships to get stranded troops on islands. This brought over 300,000 troops back to Britain. -
Fall of France
Germans hit Paris.Also, Italy attacked France from the South. Hitler forced France to sign the surrender documents on the same railroad car the Germany signed the armistice. AFter this, Germany occupied Norther France. In the South, they set up a 'puppet state' -
Battle of Britain
Britain was alone in Western Europe. Hitler was sure Britain would surrender and make peace, but they didn't. HItler ordered plans for Operation Sea Lion- invasion of Britain. In preparation, he launched massive air strikes against Britain. -
Nazi Genocide
This was Hitler's plan to kill all people "racially inferior", particularly jews. Hitler built special "death camps" throughout Poland. Here, Nazi engineers organized several ways of killing men, women, and children. By 1945, the Nazis had killed 6 million Jews. -
Operation Barbarossa
3 million Germans poured into the Soviet Union. They captured Stalin unprepared. As the Nazis invaded deeper into Russia, the Russian troops destroyed favtories, farms, and burned crops to keep thme out of enemy hands. -
Attack on Pearl Harbor
General Tojo of Japan, ordered a suprise attack on the american fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Japanese airplanes damaged or destroyed 19 ships, smashed armerican ariplanse on ground, and killed more than 2,400 people. Thenext day, the U.S. declared war on Japan. -
Battle of Stalingrad
This is one of the costliest battles of the war. Hitler wanted to capture this city, but Stalin was equally defendent. The battle cost the germans about 300,000 killed, wounded, or captured soldiers. -
Battle of Midway
United States warships and airplanes secerely damaged Japanese fleets. These victories weakend Japan's military and stopped them from advancing their territory. -
Battle of El Alamein
British stopped Rommel's advance. After they won this war, they drove axis forces back across Libya and Tunisia. -
Invasion of Italy
British and American armies landed in Sicily then Southern Italy. They defeated the Italian forces in about a month. Hitler then sent troops to help the Italian military. Over the next 18 months, the allies pushed slowly up the Italian Peninsula. -
Battle of Okinawa
The Japanese showed they would rather fight to deaththan surrender. They would crash their explosive planes into U.S, warships. They hoped this would stop the Allies and save their nation from defeat. -
D-Day
The allies open a second front in Europe. They invaded France from the English Channel and the South. The Germans retreated and within a month all of France was free. -
Use of Atomic Weapons
The use of atmoic weapons brought a quick end to the war. Truman thought that Japan wouldn't surrender without an invasion. He also hoped this would impress the SOviet Union of U.S. power. Shortly after the bomb was dropped, World War II ended. -
Surrender of Japan
The first atomic bomb was succesfuly tested in New Mexico. After the death of Franklin roosevelt, Harry Truman decided to drop one on Japan. Shortly after, Japan surrendered and WWII ended. -
