Germany, despite its treaties, invades Poland. This causes France and the Soviet Union to declare war on the Axis powers, and the war begins -
France is Invaded
Not exaclty known for its ability to fight, France signs an agreement with Germany to cede the northern half of the country. Germany occupies France until After D-Day. -
Germany Invades Russia
This is where things take a turn for the worst. The allied forces seem to be struggling, and American involvement seems as though it will have to come soon or not come at all. -
Pearl Harbor
The Japanese, discontented by United States economic actions in the Pacific, dropped bombs on the naval base in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. approxiamately 2400 americans were killed and there was sufficient damage to ships and planes. -
America Enters the War
American troops struggle to arm themselves in time to enter the war. The US declares War on Germany and the first troops move to Britain, much needed relief to the allied forces. -
Victory in Africa
Strategy included a war front in Northern Africa, which was fought by German General Edwin Rommel, and American General Patton. The plan, one of Churchill's, was to attack from the Meditteranean, and move upward through Italy. -
Invasion of Normandy
Part of Operation Overlord, Allied forces cross the English channel into occupied France at Normandy. Their seige, known as D-day was a turning point in the war in the allies favor. -
Yalta Conference
The leaders of the "Big Three", Great Britain, Soviet Union, and America, all meet to discuss the treaty to end the war and post-war actions and reparations. -
Death of FDR
The only President to serve more than two terms, FDR died in his fourth term. He never did see complete peace. He died of cerebral hemmoraghing. -
V-E Day
The day of Germany's surrender, it was celebrated around the world. The abbreviation stands for Victory in Europe Day. -
Hiroshima
This city was the first to be bombed in an effort to stop Japanese fighting without losing allied lives. It was very effective, and the first use of an atomic bomb as a weapon. -
Nagasaki
Because one bomb wasn't enough, and because the psychological horror of the bombing not stopping was enough to force the japanese to surrender, the United States also bombed the city of Nagasaki. -
V-J Day
The Japanese surrender, having been decimated on their home continent. This marks the final surrender of the axis powers, and a final victory for the Allies.
