Germany Invades Poland
The German military invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 and with the help of the Soviet military took control of the entire country by October 6, 1939.
The invasion marked the start of World War II although at the time it was not believed that the war would spread beyond Poland. The Germans conducted total war targeting civilians as well as combat troops ending in over 5.5 million Polish deaths. Poland fell to the Germans and the Soviets and France and Great Britain declared war on Germany -
Battle of Britain
The battle began in mid July and, the German Luftwaffe concentrated on the destruction of the Britain RAF, attacking airfields and radar bases. The Battle of Britain was the German air force's attempt to gain air superiority over the RAF from July to September 1940. This battle marked the first defeat of Hitler. Britain defeated the Luftwaffe destroying 1652 air craft. -
Opperation Barbarosa
Operation Barbarossa was the German invasion of Russia starting June 22, 1941 and ending December of the same year. Operation Barbarossa was the single largest military invasion in the history of the world. Since the Germans underestimated the capacity and will of the Soviets to fight, the battle weakened the German military to the point it was eventually defeated. German forces were never able to reach Moscow and suffered such large losses. -
Battle of Moscow
The battle of Moscow took place between october 1941 and january 1942 at the largest Soviet city, Moscow in Russia. The Germans used the operation typhoon against the Russians. Hitler wanted to capture Moscow so then the rest of Russia would collapse allowing them to take complete control. Germany was brutally defeated by the Russians resulting in a failure of operation Barbarosa. -
Battle of Stalingrad
The battle of Stalingrad was a brutal fight between the Nazi Germany and its allies against the Soiet Union on July 17th 1942. Germans wanted to capture Stalingrad for its resources and because it was such an idustrial city. The Soiets took the victory of this battle destroying the German's 6th Army, causing the axis powers to begin to decline in the Eastern front, and it was the turning point of World War II. -
Battle of Kursk
On July 4th 1943 the Battle of Kursk occured on the eastern front. It was considered the biggest tank battle. The battle of Kursk was a German attempt to get on the ofensive after the defeat of Stalingrad. The Soviets gained a victory and the Germany's offensive power in the eastern front cripped. -
D-Day, France
D-Day was the begining of the battle of Normandy on June 6th 1944. American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along the coast of France’s Normandy region. D-Day helped pae way for the Allies to liberate all the german occupied countries. The Allies took a victory against Germany, removing them from northwestern France and liberating Paris. -
Battle of Buldge, Lux/Belgium
The battle of Bulge was a German offensive attack towards the allies at Belgium, France, and Luxemburg. Hitler planned this battle to break up the alliance between France, Britain, and America. The Allies gained victory and the German's significanty lost many soldiers along with weapons. -
Battle of Berlin
The battle of Berlin helped mark the end of World War II. It was a battle between the German forces and the Soviets. The Soviets declared war on the Germans to force them to surrender. Germans finally surrendered once the Soviets attacked Berlin. Hitler and other Nazi officers commited suicide after the attack. Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Soviets. -
Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki - Japan
From august 6th to the 9th 1945, the United States bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the final stages of World War II. The united States wanted to end the conflict between them and Japan by forcing them to surrender. Japan's emeror Hirohito finally surrendered the country after two disaterous atomic bombs.
