Hitler planed to invade the Soviet Union. In June if 1941 German tanks and aircrafts roared into the Soviet Union starting the invasion.The Soviets used the scorched earth strategy and many Soviets were dying. Hitler like Napoleon had his troops in summer uniforms so many frose to death causing 500,000 lives. -

It is the 2nd major German offense to sieze the Soviet capital. The Germans wanted Moscow because it was a major communication and industrial center for the soviets. The Germans wanted to destroy the Red Armys campaign. They kept fighting untill the German army had been pushed back 160 miles away from the Soviet capital. -

The luftwaffe went on nightly bombing raids that set much of the city ablaze and reduced the rest to rubble. The Soviets counter attacked the German outside Stalingrad and cut off there supplies. This gave the Soviets a military initiative. The German lines were streched way behond what was safe. Hitler kept attacking Stalingrad because he thought he must have it but this only wore them down. -
Battle of Kursk
This was the largest tank engagement in history. The battle of Kursk demonstrated the end of German dominance on the Eastern front. Hitler had planned to blast the Soviets from Kursk. However, the Germans lost 70,000 men, 2,900 tanks, 195 self-propelled guns, 844 artillery pieces, and 1,392 planes. This cost the German army the strategic initiative. The Germans were now defensive and they took almost continous retreat that ended in Berlin. -

The Royal air force cunducted 16 air raids on the German capital in an attempt to defeat Germany by destroying Berlin. This attack would cripple and industrial base for the German armed forces.During the offensive the bombing commander dropped 31,000 tons of bombs and 10,000 German civilians were killed and 27% of the built up area of Berlin was destroyed. -
D-Day, France
In June of 1944 150,00 Allied troops stormed the beaches or Normandy. This was the largest amphibious operation in history. Surprise was essential for the ambush. Air support disabled most of the German coastal defense. D-Day estaclished an allied foothold in France which gave the allies the upper hand and started the role of events that would eventually make the Germans surrender. -

This was the largest land battle on the western front during WWII and it was also the largest engagement ever faught by the U.S. army. German forces created a bulge on the allied lines that was 50 miles wide and 70 miles deep. The U.S. assesed this and sent troops to the area. The fghting continued until the germans were pushed back to there original positions. The U.S. could replace there losses however, the Germans could not which eventually lead to the Germans surrendering 4 months later. -

The bombing of Japan was the retaliation for the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The United States dropped 2 nuclear bombs on Japan. Many saw the bombs as a solution to the war with the fewest amount of casualties. This remains the only wartime detonation of an atomic bomb in the history of warfare. The dropping of the 2 bombs caused the Japanese to surrender.
