    The War begins with Germany invading poland and launching the blitzkrieg.The Polish were easily defeated.     Invasions all around Europe
    April 2, 1940Germany first invades Denmark and Norway.   • Miracle of Dunkirk

    Britain forces were now wanting to escape from this chaos, so they tried to sneak back to England by a port in France called Dunkirk.Many small ships were donate to the British.The receiving of all of the donations was called Operation Dynamo.It is also called the Miracle of Dunkirk.
  • Air raids in France

    Air raids began in France. The government left France citizens to deal with the war.The French got back at the Germans by air raiding Berlin. France eventually surrendered and the Germans made them sign a treaty that was just as humiliating as the treaty that the French made them sign to end WWI.
  • National Defense Research Committee

    President Roosevelt creates the National Defense Research Committee to study the feasibility of a nuclear weapons.Most of everything that this group discussed was very secretive.They thought of the atomic bomb and radars used.
  • Code Breakers

    Code Breakers
    The British start breaking the Germans Enigma codes very frequently. The Polish though were the first people to crack them, but the British quickly caught on.Their code breaking played a crucial role in defeating the Germans at the end. [picture source](www.information-management.com )
  • Gassing at Camps

    The first gassing techniques were being used at Auschwitz. It was one of six Nazi concentration camps in Poland.Auschwitz was the largest one.The Nazis had this built before they invaded Poland in September of 1939.
  • Bombing Britian

    Germany dropped many bombs on London and other major cities in Britain.Many of Britain’s landmarks were hit and over 30,000 citizens died. It was one of the most destructive air raids of the entire war that was on England.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, USA.The very next day the US declares war on them.On the 11 of December both Italy and Germany declared war on the US.This plan is also referred to Operation A.The Japanese did the bombing to prevent them being in trouble and not be messed with.     Battle of Midway
    Six months after Pearl Harbor and some codes were broken,three aircraft carriers were sent to Midway Island in Japan.This is known as the Battle of Midway. 5,000 Japanese soldiers were killed and they were no longer a threat to the Pacific islands and countries.The Japanese ruler was Isoroku Yamamoto. picture source
  • Battle of Stalingrad

    The Battle of Stalingrad began in Stalingrad, Russia. Russia was victorious against the German 6th Army.Many Russians died both citizens and soldiers. After this battle, the Germans were on the defensive in the East from then on.

    Unconditional Surrenedr
    Roosevelt announces “Unconditional Surrender” Policy.He says that they will not accept a surrender from Germany or Japan for no reason.Winston Churchill did not like this policy. Joseph Stalin did not like it either.This policy made the war last longer because countries want to resist. picture source

    The US starts to use H2X bombing radar to locate targets on the ground through the clouds at night. Another useful discovery was made in the US. It is the penicillin treatment. It helped with syphilis.

    D-Day
    D-Day was in Normandy,France.Dwight Eisenhower led this battle of over 200,000 British, American, and Canadians soldiers.The French capital fell shortly after.It was also called the Operation Neptune.The landings were in two phases.

  • Cherry Stone

    German V-1 buzz bomb attacks begins against London. By September, the Germans had created a V-2 buzz bomb and bombed London with those.These bombs were pulse jet powered bombs.The codename for this plan was called “Cherry Stone”.
  • Planning to use atomic bomb

    The Allies agreed to bomb Japan with atomic bomb when the material to do so is ready. Roosevelt and Churchill of Russia had a secret meeting about the details.They decided to keep this news away from the Soviet Union though.This was a big decision to make because they destroyed the two cities that were targeted.
  • Dresden

    The Allies began firebombing.They first hit Dresden. Then the US started firebombing the city of Tokyo, Japan. This bombing took place on March 10th.It killed about 100,000 Japanese civilians.

    FDR DIES

    Germany surrenders
    Germany surrendered for many reasons.First of all their ruler died. Hitler committed suicide because he realized that he had lost. Mussolini also died just before he did.Their forces slowly started to surrendered in Italy, Berlin, Denmark, and so on. picture source
  • Atomic Bomb

    Atomic Bomb
    The US bombs Hiroshima, after warning Japan to surrender. This bomb killed 140,000 people.Then two days later on the 8th,The Soviet Union declares war on the Japanese. They invaded Manchuria, and the very next day the US drops the second bomb. This time it was on the city of Nagasaki. This bomb killed between 40,000 and 75,000 people.This finally made the Japanese surrender. picture source
