German invasion of Poland
When Germany invaided Poland hundreds of thousands of jewish and non-jewish people fled from the German army. About 400 thousand jewish refugees stayed to fight. Thousands of refugees escaped to the south and took ships and leaving Bulgaria and Romania. It was signifigant because Germany was looking to take some land in Europe and since Poland had a weak army they went there. The German army took them by suprise which made it so easy for Germany to take their land. -

The battle of Britain was a struggle between the German Luftwaffe and the British Royal Air Force. The battle was first Battle to be fought entirely in the air. The outcome of the battle is that Germany mostly left britain to start to attack the Soviet Union. So there is no clear answer. -

Operation Barbarossa - Russia
Nazi Germany and its axis allies attacked the Soviet Union. Germany had a non violence agreement with the USSR. But Hitler had his eye on the resources in the soviet union. Both side remained suspicious of each other. German forces caught them by suprise and destroyed almost 4,000 aircrafts. It was significant because of the fact that they had a pact that they ended up breaking. -

The defence of the Soviet Union bothered Hitler. Moscow was one of the primary military and political objectives for axis forces. The Germans created a new strategy called operation Typhoon. His forth army went directly for Moscow from the west. While a separate German operational plan went down, it was called operation Wotan. That was the final phase of the war. The Germans ended up losing the Battle. The significants of this Battle is that the Germans were really prepared and ended up losing. -

While the Germans were in the city of Stalingrad, they were surrounded by Zhukov from the north to the south. About 250,000 to 300,000 men were stuck in Stalingrad during the harsh winter with a shortage of food and ammunition. It was signifigant because Germany wasnt even supposed to attack Stalingrad. -

Battle of Kursk, Russia
The Battle of Kursk was an attempt by Germany to get on the offensive after losing the battle of Stalingrad. The battle of Kursk was one of the greatest armored battles in history. That led to the largest loss in a single day. The German forces were unable to break though the Soviet lines. Later that brought the Soviet forces counterattacked. It was significant because the German army was trying so hard to defeat the Soviet lines and ended up getting destroyed in such a short time. -

On June 6 1944 Great Britan, Russia and the US stormed the beaches of Normandy to fight against Germany. this Battle was significant because it really shows everyones hatred for Germany. Germany was alone against many other countries and lost the battle of D-Day. The codename Operation Overlord was for the allied invation of northern Europe. Operation Neptune was the assault phase and started on June 6 and ended on June 30. -

The German army sent about a quarter million people to try to split up the allied forces by trying to catch them by suprise. On December 16 Germany sent 3 of its armies and created the most deadliest and most desperite battle. German forces finally broke through american forces, but Dwight D Eisenhower lead his american troops and eventually defeated Germany. -

Hiroshima/Nagasaki - Japan
The united states used a massive atomic weapon on Hiroshima. The explosive used was equivilent to 20,000 tons of TNT. The blast killed tens of thousands of civilians. The united states struck again three days later, except on Nagasaki. This was significant because it was so sudden and alarming the people in Japoan was so suprised they didnt even know how to respond.
